Data Engineer

At ElBits, our data is the foundation everything else is built on - and the need for strong data engineering keeps growing as we build more data products across the grid industry. This is where our data team plays a key role: deciding what data products to build next, finding and extracting the right data, connecting the dots across sources, and making sure it can be used together with everything else in our ecosystem.

We are now hiring a Data Engineer to help us build standardized national datasets, develop self-service data platforms, and ensure our data is high-quality, well-modeled, and easy to use - for ElBits, grid companies, government agencies, and third parties. Beyond technical skills, we also hope you bring a product mindset: you like being part of deciding what data products to build, not only how to build them.

You will have a challenge to sink your teeth into - balancing hands-on data engineering with a broader perspective on how our data products connect and create value across the grid ecosystem.

What will you do?

In this role, you will work closely with our data and platform teams, as well as product owners, developers, and designers, to turn data into products that grid companies, government agencies, and third parties can actually use and trust. You’ll also engage directly with external stakeholders to understand their needs and provide the right data solutions.

Responsibilities include:

• Build standardized national datasets on the power system, such as the national grid model, for use by ElBits, grid companies, government agencies, and third parties.

• Develop self-service platforms that enable efficient data exchange and storage between grid companies and ElBits.

• Collaborate closely with users of platform services within ElBits, as well as external stakeholders such as grid companies, government bodies, and third parties, to understand their needs and provide data solutions.

• Facilitate third-party innovation through effective data sharing and collaboration, enabling new applications and insights in the power sector.

• Advise our partners and internal teams on best practices for data quality, data modeling, and data management within the power sector, contributing to the development of standards and guidelines for data handling.

• Collaborate with product owners, developers, and designers to identify problems, prototype solutions, and implement experiments for validation, ensuring that the data is structured and accessible.

• Ensure the processing of power-sensitive data complies with relevant laws and regulations, by implementing necessary access controls and ensuring the protection of our data.

Who are we looking for?

You’re a hands-on data engineer with a strong interest in building data products that people actually trust and use. You enjoy the full journey from source data to insight - finding and extracting the right data, modeling it well, and making it easy for others to build on. You like being close to the product decisions, not just the pipelines.

We believe you have:

• A product mindset. You want to be involved in deciding what data products to build, not just how to build them, and you understand how your work supports business objectives across the grid industry.

• Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines with Python and SQL, using modern ELT approaches.

• Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience with tools such as Terraform or Pulumi.

• Experience with data modeling, and a strong sense of what makes data good enough for others to build on.

• Experience with Azure and BI tooling.

• A pragmatic and improvement-oriented approach. You look for the simplest solution that works, and keep iterating from there.

• A customer-first mindset, whether you’re engaging with a grid company, a product manager, or another data team.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain data and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Fluency in Norwegian and/or English.

While not required, it’s an advantage if you:

• Have experience from the energy sector.

• Have worked in a startup or scaleup environment.

• Have experience with tools such as Databricks, MS Fabric, dbt, DuckDB, Prefect, or other tools in the modern data stack.

• Have experience with Kubernetes, CI/CD, and GitHub.

• Have experience with RDF and information modeling.

We build on Azure as the foundation for our data platform, with Delta Lake and Parquet as our core data formats, and Python and SQL as our main languages for data engineering. Today, our platform is built around Prefect pipelines and DuckDB adapters, with tools such as Metabase and Superset making data accessible across the organization.

As the platform evolves, the data platform team continuously evaluates new technologies and capabilities to identify opportunities to improve how we build, manage, and work with data.
