Full description
About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on Lead QA Engineer to drive the quality strategy for our Flutter mobile application. This is a player-coach role: you'll spend the majority of your time in the details — writing and reviewing test cases, building automation, and shaping release plans — while providing technical leadership and coordination for the QA team. This is not a people-management role; you won't be building or managing a large reporting team. Instead, you'll set direction, unblock teammates, and lead by example through the quality of your own work.
You'll partner closely with engineering, product, and data teams to make sure every release meets a high bar for quality, is tested against the devices and conditions our users actually rely on, and ships with confidence.
What You'll Do
Technical & Team Leadership
- Act as the QA lead for the team — setting testing priorities, coordinating day-to-day work across QA engineers, and making sure efforts are aligned with release goals.
- Stay hands-on and embedded in the work itself; lead through doing, not delegating.
- Coordinate with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to keep quality efforts synced with the broader delivery timeline.
- Mentor and support other QA team members, offering guidance on best practices, tooling, and testing approach.
Test Case Development & Review
- Write clear, thorough test cases covering new features, edge cases, and regression scenarios.
- Review test cases written by other QA team members and provide constructive, actionable feedback.
- Continuously improve test case quality and coverage standards across the team.
Test Planning & Device Coverage
- Build comprehensive test plans for each release, incorporating both manual and automated coverage.
- Use analytics and usage data to identify the most-used devices, OS versions, and configurations among our user base, and ensure test plans prioritize coverage accordingly.
- Continuously revisit device/OS coverage as the user base and market shift.
Automation
- Design, build, and maintain automated test suites using Flutter and Patrol for UI, integration, and end-to-end testing.
- Identify high-value opportunities for automation to increase coverage and reduce manual testing overhead.
- Maintain and evolve the automation framework as the app grows in complexity.
Release Quality & Production Readiness
- Build and own the release-readiness plan for promoting builds from staging through to production, defining the quality gates, sign-off criteria, and risk checks at each stage.
- Drive go/no-go decisions for releases based on test results, risk assessment, and quality metrics.
- Continuously refine the release process to catch issues earlier and reduce production incidents.
What We're Looking For
- Proven hands-on QA automation experience with Flutter apps, using Patrol (or comparable Flutter-native automation frameworks).
- Experience leading QA efforts on a team — as a working lead who coordinates and guides others, not as a manager of a large reporting team.
- Strong test case writing skills, along with experience and comfort reviewing others' test cases and giving direct, useful feedback.
- Experience building test plans informed by real usage/analytics data (e.g., device, OS, and market distribution) to prioritize coverage effectively.
- Experience defining or contributing to release/promotion processes that safeguard production quality.
- Solid understanding of the mobile QA lifecycle: manual testing, automated testing, regression, and release management.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills — comfortable coordinating across engineering, product, and data stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into build/release workflows.
- Familiarity with analytics tooling (e.g., Firebase Analytics, Amplitude, Mixpanel) used to inform device/coverage decisions.
- Experience with performance, accessibility, or security testing for mobile apps.
