This role sits within our Product & Technology function in our Amsterdam office, home to over 300 talented professionals, where cross-functional teams design, develop and scale the products that millions of users rely on every day across our Benelux marketplaces, Marktplaats and 2dehands/2ememain.

About the role

The Horizontal Crew brings together six teams covering the full spectrum of buying and selling on Marktplaats; from consumer-to-consumer transactions to the tools and experiences that help business sellers grow on our platform.

As Senior Engineering Manager you lead the General Classifieds team while taking on a broader role across the horizontal crew. The General Classifieds team sits at the heart of the crew's strategic agenda, with significant work ahead on platform evolution, subscriptions and commercial growth. You bring the engineering depth and seniority to contribute meaningfully beyond your own team; shaping how we work, spotting what needs attention across team boundaries, and ensuring engineering has a strong and grounded voice in crew-level conversations alongside product. This is a role being defined at a moment of growth and change, so you'll also help shape what it becomes.

What you'll do

Your team

• Lead your engineering team: own delivery, team health, ways of working and the career development of your engineers
• Foster a safe, inclusive and high-performing culture where engineers have ownership and grow
• Work closely with your Product Manager to align the team's work with crew and company objectives
• Lead the team through a significant technical agenda, including work on subscriptions and platform integrations central to the crew's strategy
• Maintain a healthy balance between short-term execution and long-term sustainability
• Proactively address bottlenecks, risks and inefficiencies

Across the crew

• Act as a senior engineering voice across the horizontal crew
• Drive the adoption of engineering practices and standards across teams, in partnership with architects and engineering leads.
• Own the identification and resolution of cross-team engineering risks, inconsistencies and technical gaps.
• In times of change, help provide clarity and stability across the crew

Partnership with the GEM

• Partner closely with the Group Engineering Manager on organizational and delivery decisions
• Be a sounding board on crew direction, team setup and engineering culture

Who you are• 6+ experience leading an engineering team in a cross-functional, product-driven environment

• A strong engineering background; you bring depth and judgment that lets you engage credibly at crew level, beyond your own team
• Servant-leadership style, with the confidence to get into the details when needed
• You thrive in an environment that's evolving, are comfortable with ambiguity, and default to action over perfection
• A proactive, can-do mindset with a strong sense of ownership and a hands-on approach to solving complex problems
• Collaborative by nature, with the ability to build trust and challenge constructively
