Full description

At Garmin we create products that are designed indoors for outdoor activities. We do this to enable our customers to make the most of their time spent pursuing their passions.

We are a global company with offices in the US, Europe and Asia. In these centers, we carry out the various stages of product development, from initial concept to mass production of ready-to-sell units. We embrace a vertically integrated business model with strategic design, manufacturing, distribution, sales and support centers around the world to maximize our value to customers.

Varia is our dedicated cycling safety companion app, purpose-built around the Varia family of rearview radar, tail light and camera devices. It turns a rider's phone into a rear-facing awareness system, streaming radar data over BLE to surface color-coded threat levels, backed by tone and vibration alerts that keep working with the phone in your pocket or on the handlebar. On camera-equipped devices it also handles manual photo and video capture, video processing, and automatic incident recording. It is a safety focused feature set with an unusually high bar: low-latency sensor streaming, rock-solid background connectivity and battery-conscious behavior, because a dropped connection here isn't a missed notification, it's a warning a rider never got.

We believe that collaboration leads to the best ideas, and we rely heavily on team interaction. As a role based in Cluj-Napoca, this position will require 5 days in the office each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute designs for software components within a larger project.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced Software Engineers.
  • Collaborate and add value through participation in peer code reviews, providing comments and suggestions.
  • Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes.
  • Perform technical root cause analysis and outline corrective action for given problems.
  • Strong knowledge of Android architecture components (ViewModel, StateFlow/LiveData, Room) and application architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture)
  • Proficiency in Kotlin including coroutines, Flow, and idiomatic language features.
  • Strong Jetpack Compose skills: state hoisting, side effects, theming, custom components, and View interop.
  • Experience with dependency injection frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of background processing (WorkManager, foreground services) and BT/BLE APIs.
  • Familiarity with testing practices: unit tests (JUnit, MockK) and UI tests (Compose Testing / Espresso).
  • Experience with Gradle/AGP build configuration and Android Studio tooling.
  • Minimum 3 years of Android development experience.

Benefits to enhance your experience:

  • 24 days off each year plus extra vacation days based on years at Garmin and compensation for legal holidays.
  • Health package subscription and yearly budget for glasses.
  • Monthly budget for sports and wellbeing activities.
  • Local and global career development programs (training, mentorship, technical and leadership development, and more).
  • Access to e-learning platforms and support for technical conferences attendance.
  • Loyalty bonus within the company, plus other special bonuses (for holidays and personal life events).
  • Meal tickets.

Yours exclusively when part of our team:

  • Significant discount for Garmin products.
  • Employee stock purchase plan.
  • Contribution to the retirement plan (Pillar 3).
  • Garmin products available for testing and borrowing.
  • A comprehensive event series championing wellbeing, sports, and community tailored to foster holistic health (featuring sports events, classes, hackathons, parties, and more).
  • Other benefits which we invite you to discover along the recruitment process.
