Platform / DevOps Engineer (Renovate & GitLab)
Freelance | Up to 100% (full-time) | Remote with ~20% on site in Ruhr, Germany | ASAP to end 2026 (with option to extend)
We are looking for a Platform / DevOps Engineer to run Renovate as a central dependency update service for several thousands of GitLab repositories.
Key tasks
- Operate and scale self-hosted Renovate across a large GitLab estate (autodiscover, sharding, repository cache, global and repo config)
- Design, write and govern shared Renovate presets and policies (packageRules, grouping, schedules, automerge, minimumReleaseAge, Dependency Dashboard)
- Manage GitLab capacity: CI load, runners, API rate limits, bot users, tokens and permissions
- Support many development teams in onboarding to a common policy without breaking their pipelines
- Build audit and automation scripts against the GitLab REST API
- Analyse Renovate run logs and resolve issues across package ecosystems
Requirements
Eligibility
- Fluent English or German
- Residency and right to work in the EU
- Travel readiness (Ruhr, Germany)
Technical and professional
- Must have: Renovate configuration and self-hosting
- Must have: GitLab administration (groups, permissions, service accounts, access tokens, protected branches, MR approval rules, CODEOWNERS)
- Must have: GitLab CI/CD (scheduled pipelines, parallel:matrix, runners, CI variables, caching, MR pipelines)
- Should have: Containers (Docker, non-root images, digest pinning, internal registry mirroring)
- Should have: Scripting in Bash or Python with glab, curl and jq against REST APIs
- Should have: Kubernetes (CronJobs, PersistentVolumes, securityContext, Secrets, Helm), secrets management, supply chain security and observability
- Nice to have: Working knowledge of npm, Maven/Gradle, NuGet, pip/Poetry, Go, Docker, Helm and Terraform versioning and lock files
- Nice to have: Mend Renovate Enterprise, GitLab Dependency Scanning, Terraform, experience leading platform rollouts
