Overview

The Construction Change Manager is responsible for managing and controlling changes throughout the lifecycle of construction projects. This role ensures that changes to project scope, design, schedule, cost, specifications, contracts, and execution are properly identified, documented, evaluated, approved, communicated, and implemented.

The Construction Change Manager works closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Project Controls, Engineering, Design, Procurement, Commercial, Contracts, Quality, Safety, and contractors to minimize disruption and ensure that approved changes are delivered in accordance with project requirements.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of construction processes, project controls, contract administration, change management, and cost and schedule impact assessment.

Location & Travel Details

You’ll get the opportunity to travel across the US, helping our team build infrastructure projects. This is a traveling position, with up to 70% travel time. You have the potential to be placed on a project site located in various states throughout the US. (Full List: NC, VA, GA, TX, FL, IA, WY).

Responsibilities

Change Management & Control

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the project's Change Management and Change Control procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive Change Register for all project changes.
  • Identify potential changes arising from design development, scope changes, RFIs, field conditions, client requirements, regulatory requirements, contractor proposals, and other sources.
  • Ensure all changes are formally documented and processed through the appropriate approval process.
  • Review change requests for completeness, justification, scope, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure changes are properly categorized as approved, pending, rejected, or under review.
  • Monitor changes from initiation through final approval, implementation, and closeout.
  • Ensure unauthorized changes are identified and escalated promptly.

Change Impact Assessment

  • Coordinate detailed assessments of the impact of proposed changes on:

  • Work with Project Controls and Planning teams to determine schedule impacts and critical-path implications.
  • Coordinate with Cost Control and Commercial teams to evaluate cost impacts.
  • Identify potential secondary, cumulative, and downstream impacts of proposed changes.
  • Provide recommendations to project leadership regarding the risks and benefits of proposed changes.

Change Orders & Variations

  • Manage the change order and variation process for contractors and subcontractors.
  • Review contractor change proposals, quotations, and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate technical, commercial, cost, and schedule reviews of change orders.
  • Verify quantities, labor, materials, equipment, rates, markups, and other cost components where applicable.
  • Ensure contractor claims and change requests are supported by appropriate documentation.
  • Track negotiation status and assist Commercial/Contracts teams with resolution of disputed changes.
  • Maintain accurate records of approved and pending change orders.
  • Monitor the cumulative financial and schedule impact of changes.

Construction & Field Changes

  • Work closely with construction teams to identify changes arising in the field.
  • Coordinate changes resulting from unforeseen site conditions, constructability issues, design discrepancies, and coordination conflicts.
  • Review RFIs, technical queries, design revisions, field instructions, and site directives for potential change implications.
  • Ensure field changes are properly documented and authorized before implementation where practicable.
  • Track the implementation of approved changes and verify that project documentation is updated accordingly.

Risk & Project Controls

  • Identify risks associated with proposed and pending changes.
  • Maintain visibility of change-related cost and schedule exposure.
  • Support project forecasting and estimate-at-completion activities.
  • Analyze trends in change requests to identify recurring issues and potential scope gaps.
  • Coordinate with the Risk Manager to ensure significant change-related risks are incorporated into the project risk register.
  • Provide change information for monthly project reports and executive dashboards.
  • Monitor trends in change volume, value, causes, aging, and approval cycle times.

Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate with the Owner, Project Manager, Construction Manager, design consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and internal departments.
  • Facilitate change review meetings and change control boards.
  • Communicate the status, impact, and approval requirements of significant changes.
  • Provide clear recommendations to senior project leadership.
  • Ensure all stakeholders understand their responsibilities within the change control process.

Documentation & Governance

  • Maintain a complete and auditable record of project changes.
  • Ensure change documentation complies with contractual and project requirements.
  • Maintain change logs, approval records, cost estimates, schedule impact assessments, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly change management reports.
  • Establish appropriate approval thresholds and escalation requirements.
  • Ensure changes are incorporated into project baselines, budgets, schedules, drawings, specifications, and other relevant project documentation.
  • Support project closeout by ensuring all changes are properly reconciled and documented.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Business, or a related field.
  • Typically 10+ years of experience in construction, engineering, project controls, commercial management, estimating or change management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing changes on major construction or capital projects.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, change orders, variations, claims, and commercial processes.
  • Experience evaluating cost and schedule impacts of construction changes.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and field directives.
  • Experience working with contractors, subcontractors, consultants, and owners.
  • Strong knowledge of construction project controls and scheduling.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP, CCM, AACE, MRICS, or equivalent professional certification.
  • Change management certification such as Prosci or CCMP.
  • Experience with Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with cost management and estimating systems.
  • Experience with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Primavera Unifier, Kahua, or similar construction management platforms.
  • Knowledge of FIDIC, NEC, AIA, JCT, or other construction contract forms.
  • Experience with major infrastructure, commercial, industrial, energy, healthcare, data center, manufacturing, or transportation projects.
