Working Student Software Engineer (Flutter) (m/f/d)
Maple Tales GmbH Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany
E-Learning Providers · 2-10 employees
About the role
You will develop and maintain features across Flutter-based mobile and web applications, including student reading and language-learning tools. Additionally, you will help build CI/CD pipelines, perform code reviews, and analyze user data to improve product experiences.
What they look for
Requirements
Candidates must be enrolled students in Computer Science or a related field and be legally eligible to work in Germany. You should have solid hands-on experience with Flutter and Dart, along with familiarity with Firebase and collaborative development workflows.
Benefits
Full description
Maple Tales builds reading and language-learning apps that real schools use every day. A Flutter-based reading app for elementary students, a teacher dashboard, and a white-label language-learning platform running under several school brands. We're a small team, so this isn't a shadowing role: you'll ship real fixes and features into production apps, work directly with the founders, and see your work reach classrooms within days, not sprints.
Tasks
- Ship features and fixes across our Flutter apps, including our student reading app, language-learning app, and teacher dashboard, on both mobile and web.
- Maintain and extend our white-label language-learning codebase that powers several branded language schools.
- Work directly with Firebase, from Firestore data and Authentication flows to Hosting deploys and Remote Config.
- Help us build a real CI/CD deployment pipeline. We already lint and test in GitLab CI. Deployment is still manual today, and we want you to help us change that.
- Test across browsers, devices, and branded instances to catch inconsistencies before our schools do.
- Review code, pair with the team on harder bugs, and contribute to technical decisions.
- Help us understand how students actually use Maple Tales. Instrument new features, analyze user journeys, and turn what we learn into product improvements.
- Prototype new reading and language-learning experiences and help turn the promising ones into production features.
- Improve our automated testing and monitoring so we catch regressions before our students and schools do.
- Build reusable components and internal tooling that make it faster to ship features across our apps and white-label brands.
Requirements
- Enrolled student in Computer Science (Informatik), Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik), or a related field, available for roughly 20 hours per week during the semester.
- Based in Germany and legally eligible to work in Germany as a working student. Ideally, you are based in Frankfurt am Main or the surrounding area.
- Solid hands-on experience with Flutter and Dart, or strong cross-platform mobile development experience and the motivation to get fluent quickly.
- Familiar with state management patterns. We use BLoC, but experience with comparable approaches is absolutely fine.
- Experience with Firebase, or a transferable background with another BaaS or cloud platform, particularly authentication, document databases, and hosting.
- Enough web fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, and the DOM, to debug how Flutter Web actually renders. It has its own quirks.
- Comfortable with Git and collaborative development workflows. Experience with GitLab is a plus.
- Comfortable taking ownership of a problem, asking the right questions, and figuring things out without needing every step predefined.
- You know how to debug systematically and chase root causes rather than just symptoms. When something is "flaky," you want to understand why before you fix it.
- Fluent in English and comfortable working in an English-speaking team. German skills are a plus.
