Full description

Are you a quality-minded engineer ready to shape how great software gets built? Join Kinsale Insurance, a leading excess and surplus (E&S) lines carrier headquartered in Richmond, VA. We're known for our high-quality, high-touch approach and innovative, personalized solutions that help clients manage complex risks, and we bring that same standard of excellence to how we build and test our own technology.

About the Role

As a QA Analyst, you'll serve as a proactive quality partner throughout the software development lifecycle — shaping testability, risk-based quality strategy, and sustainable automation before implementation even begins. You'll bring curiosity, sound judgment, and a collaborative approach as you influence teams to design, build, release, and operate software with quality built in from the start. This role offers the chance to grow alongside experienced engineers and QA leaders while helping build a high-performing engineering culture.

What You'll Do

  • Identify, own, and solve quality problems independently and as part of a team
  • Design and evolve sustainable, reliable test automation that delivers meaningful end-to-end coverage and long-term maintainability
  • Partner with product and engineering teams early to translate business outcomes and technical designs into testable requirements and an effective automation approach for web-based Java applications
  • Shape risk-based quality and test strategies before execution begins, defining coverage, testability, and acceptance criteria
  • Incorporate non-functional requirements — including performance, security, resilience, and observability — into quality planning and test activities
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, engineers, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements, surface quality risks, and inform scope and priority decisions
  • Diagnose, isolate, and clearly report defects, using technical evidence to support root-cause analysis and verify fixes
  • Influence quality across the development lifecycle through design and code reviews, test development, and clear communication of results and risk
  • Mentor others in sound testing practices and partner with QA leaders to continually refine Kinsale's quality strategy and standards

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with web, API, database, and automated software testing, including HTML, JavaScript, CSS, SQL, Playwright, and REST APIs
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate business requirements into test strategies, plans, and automated or manual test cases
  • Experience testing across functional, integration, regression, performance, UI, and end-to-end scenarios
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab) and quality assurance practices in modern software delivery environments
  • Strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot) and hands-on exposure to APM tools, logs, and distributed tracing are a plus
