About the Role
We're seeking a Principal Product Designer to set design strategy across multiple product areas and shape how Dow Jones approaches design at scale. This is one of our most senior individual contributor roles, requiring someone who can work directly with executive leadership to resolve strategic conflicts and identify company-wide opportunities.
As a Principal Product Designer, you'll have unique visibility across product areas and platforms, enabling you to spot patterns and opportunities that others miss. You'll work directly with SLT, ELT, and C-suite executives to shape company direction, while your design patterns become standards across major portions of Dow Jones. This role demands someone who can navigate extreme complexity, influence at the highest levels, and establish practices that become industry benchmarks.
You'll be the design voice for challenges that lack precedent, developing senior talent across multiple product areas while representing Dow Jones at industry events. Your work will directly impact business metrics across multiple years, positioning our company ahead of industry transformations.
The Principal Product Designer will report to a Sr. Manager, Director, Sr. Director, or VP within the Design & Research organization.
You Will
- Set design strategy across multiple product areas and their platform connections, working directly with SLT, ELT, and C-suite executives to shape company direction. You'll resolve conflicts between different strategic directions and help Dow Jones adapt to market changes through design leadership.
- Present to and influence executive leadership, demonstrating how thoughtfully designed products and platforms create competitive advantage. You'll synthesize competing executive concepts into unified direction and counsel leaders on decisions that reshape our entire portfolio.
- Lead company-wide strategic projects requiring alignment across all products, platforms, and business units. You'll partner with executives to remove organizational barriers and reshape how Dow Jones creates products at scale.
- Identify company-wide opportunities through your unique visibility across product areas and platforms, spotting patterns that inform multi-year strategic planning. You'll anticipate industry transformations and position Dow Jones ahead of change.
- Establish design practices that become industry benchmarks, developing new methods, frameworks, and tools that improve design practice company-wide. You'll share these approaches externally through speaking engagements and publications.
- Solve highly ambiguous, precedent-setting challenges by developing new approaches that become standard practice across the organization. You'll navigate extreme complexity to create clear strategies for executive decision-making.
- Shape platform evolution across multiple product areas, defining how platform designs create competitive advantage and enable capabilities that demonstrate real value to users and executives.
- Develop senior design talent across multiple product areas, mentoring Principal-level designers and advising executives on design leadership. You'll create talent pipelines and foster inclusion in high-stakes decisions.
- Set and embody quality standards that influence major portions of Dow Jones, establishing processes that maintain excellence across all products, markets, and platforms worldwide.
- Build external partnerships with agencies, vendors, and academic institutions that enhance our capabilities, while establishing Dow Jones's reputation as a design leader through industry presence.
You Have
- 10+ years of product design experience, with significant time spent setting strategy for complex, multi-product organizations.
- A portfolio demonstrating strategic impact at scale, showing how you've shaped company direction, resolved conflicts between competing strategies, and delivered measurable business value across multiple years.
- Proven track record working with C-level executives, presenting to boards, and influencing company-wide decisions through design leadership.
- Experience setting design strategy for multiple product areas simultaneously, with demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and resolve strategic conflicts.
- Excellence in platform thinking, with a history of establishing patterns that become standards across major portions of an organization.
- Demonstrated thought leadership through speaking at major conferences, published articles, or industry recognition for design excellence.
- Track record of solving unprecedented challenges, creating new methods or frameworks when existing approaches don't suffice.
- Strong business acumen with ability to connect design decisions to multi-year business outcomes, speaking fluently about metrics, market dynamics, and competitive positioning.
- Experience building design capabilities at scale, including establishing operations, governance models, and talent development programs.
- Proven ability to navigate organizational complexity, working across business units, geographies, and cultures to drive alignment on strategic initiatives.
- Deep expertise across design disciplines, from visual design to systems thinking, with ability to coach others and set standards for excellence.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Design, HCI, or related field (advanced degree strongly preferred).
