Network Design Engineer

About the Role
RFNOW Inc. is seeking applications from motivated individuals interested in joining our Technical Services Team as a Network Design Engineer. In this role, you will create and optimize network architectures that support robust, scalable, and efficient communication systems across RFNOW’s network, and edge services. You will analyze our current network infrastructure and design innovative solutions that meet both current and future business needs, evolving our networks to support growth and rapid expansion across Western Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan.
You will collaborate closely with our NOC/Tower and Customer Service teams, as well as operations, project management, and vendors, to develop the processes and procedures that bring network designs from concept to deployment. As the subject matter expert and Level 3 support resource for network, IP, and edge services, your expertise will directly shape the quality of service we deliver to our customers and the ongoing success of RFNOW’s telecommunication offerings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or equivalent training and experience.
- 10+ years of experience as a network professional, including 5+ years in a network architecture or design capacity.
- Strong understanding of network protocols, routing, switching, and telecommunication technologies.
- Cisco networking training and certification.
- Experience working in an ISP organization.
- Familiarity with network simulation and design tools.
- Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements relevant to Canadian telecommunication networks.
- Strong communication and technical skills, with a proven track record of learning and adapting to changes in the network landscape.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional professional certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist (JNCIS).
- Experience with cloud networking and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies.
- Advanced knowledge of network security principles and implementation.
- Experience working within a Canadian telecommunication regulatory environment.
- Master’s degree in a relevant technical discipline.
Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and detail work related to RFNOW’s network and edge services, developing detailed network architectures and topologies for new and existing systems.
- Evolve RFNOW’s networks to support growth and rapid expansion across Western Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan.
- Build, configure, and maintain network infrastructure and services.
- Conduct network capacity planning and performance analysis to ensure optimal resource utilization, and track and produce related reports and metrics.
- Work with the NOC/Tower and Customer Service teams to develop processes and procedures for deploying services to customers.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across operations, project management, and vendors to gather requirements and translate them into technical network design specifications.
- Evaluate and select appropriate hardware, software, and protocols to meet design criteria and industry standards.
- Prepare comprehensive documentation, including design diagrams, technical reports, and implementation plans.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and Level 3 support resource for network, IP, and edge services, providing design guidance and troubleshooting assistance during implementation.
- Research and propose enhancements to fix gaps or improve RFNOW’s network services, staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends.
- Ensure network designs comply with regulatory standards and security best practices.
- Provide knowledge transfer to team members and other coworkers.

The required skills enable the Network Design Engineer to develop comprehensive network solutions by applying deep technical knowledge of protocols, hardware, and software. Analytical skills are essential for assessing network performance and capacity to ensure designs keep pace with a rapidly growing rural service area. Communication and collaboration skills are used daily to work effectively with the NOC/Tower, Customer Service, and Project Management teams, as well as external vendors, ensuring alignment and successful project delivery. Familiarity with design and simulation tools allows the Engineer to create accurate models and documentation that guide implementation, while awareness of company products, services, and industry trends supports innovative, forward-looking solutions. Preferred skills such as cloud networking, SDN, and security expertise enhance the ability to design future-proof networks that are resilient, scalable, and secure.
