Job Overview Vital Study Skills is seeking a dedicated and talented Remote Java Developer to join our team on a Full-Time basis. Since 1988, we have been at the forefront of providing evidence-based learning strategies to higher education institutions, helping to improve student retention and graduation rates. As a key member of our technology team, you will play a crucial role in developing and enhancing the software platforms that deliver our vital educational services to students and institutions across the globe. This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical skills to a mission-driven organisation that makes a real difference in education. This position is open to candidates residing in Canada, Mexico, or the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance Java-based applications.
  • Collaborate with product managers, instructional designers, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into well-engineered solutions.
  • Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, from initial concept and design through to testing, deployment, and support.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following best practices.
  • Perform code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge within the team.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve issues in our production and non-production environments.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our development processes and technology stack.

Qualifications

  • Proven professional experience in Java software development.
  • Strong proficiency with the Java language and core libraries.
  • Experience with common Java frameworks such as Spring or similar.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles and software design patterns.
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and writing efficient SQL queries.
  • Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently and manage your time effectively in a remote setting.
  • A genuine interest in education technology and our company's mission is highly desirable.
