Full description

At Amazon Web Services (AWS), we are inventing the future of cloud computing with a team of builders who try new things and dream big dreams. Our web services provide a platform for IT infrastructure in the cloud that is used by hundreds of thousands of developers and businesses around the world.

We are seeking a Senior Solutions Architect to join the World Wide Public Sector (WWPS) Greenfield team based in Sydney. In this role, you will serve as a senior technical leader helping new-to-cloud public sector customers across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) accelerate their cloud journey on AWS. You will own the most complex customer engagements end-to-end, set quality standards for technical work-products, mentor the SA team, and operate as a force multiplier - building team capability so the organisation operates successfully without your direct involvement in every engagement.

The Greenfield SA function focuses on proactive customer engagement: helping customers move beyond reactive technical needs toward strategic cloud adoption. As a Senior SA, you will partner closely with Account Executives, contribute to territory strategy, and combine deep technical expertise with business acumen to architect solutions that address complex customer challenges in competitive procurement environments and proactive engagement motions.

Key job responsibilities Own end-to-end technical leadership for the most complex new-to-cloud public sector customers across ANZ, guiding them from first workload through production and scale.

Build trusted relationships with senior public sector leaders, understanding agency missions, compliance obligations, procurement constraints, and modernisation drivers at depth.

Partner with Account Executives on territory strategy, driving decisions on team capacity deployment and account prioritisation across ANZ.

Design and deliver tailored cloud architectures aligned with public sector requirements (security, compliance, data sovereignty), including competitive procurement environments.

Exercise independent judgment on prioritisation, escalation, and solution direction with limited guidance from leadership.

Uphold and model quality standards for team work-products - discovery outputs, architecture documents, proposals, and presentations. Be sought out for design guidance.

Build repeatable plays, contribute solutions into templates for reuse, and share lessons learned to raise the bar for the broader team.

Mentor and develop junior Solutions Architects, adapting coaching to each person's development stage across technical depth, customer engagement, escalation judgment, and AWS operating practices.

Build team capability so the organisation operates effectively without your direct involvement - enable others to succeed independently.

Identify friction in cross-team processes (e.g., handoffs between Greenfield and account teams, specialist engagement) and create or optimise mechanisms to accelerate delivery.

Navigate ANZ public sector procurement and compliance frameworks (e.g., IRAP, ISM, Essential Eight, NZ GCIO, ASD guidelines).

Coordinate internal teams and specialist resources to deliver differentiated solutions with measurable impact on adoption velocity.

Surface customer feedback on product gaps through win/loss reviews and engagement retrospectives, distilling input into clear requirements for product teams.

Write effective narratives to frame strategy for complex pursuits or technical decisions for leadership when situations are ambiguous.

Contribute to hiring, interview calibration, and onboarding for the Greenfield SA team; actively recruit and raise the hiring bar.

Evangelize AWS technology through workshops, proof-of-concept engagements, whitepapers, and customer-facing technical content.

A day in the life You lead the most complex, multi-stakeholder public-sector engagements - translating agency missions into technical strategies that land first workloads on AWS and set the foundation for broader adoption. Your days blend deep technical work (designing reference architectures, building tailored solutions, navigating compliance frameworks) with strategic influence: shaping territory strategy with Account Executives, coaching junior SAs on engagement practices, upholding quality standards across team work-products, and driving win-rate improvements through data-driven pursuit analysis.

You operate with high autonomy and limited guidance, exercising independent judgment on prioritisation, escalation, and solution direction. You develop repeatable plays, contribute solutions into templates for reuse, and identify friction in cross-team processes to accelerate delivery. You build trusted relationships with senior public sector leaders and influence procurement requirements through compelling technical narratives. You vet high-risk solution options, engage specialist resources when needed, and frame handoffs so the right people engage effectively. The role rewards technical depth, business acumen, ownership, and the ability to earn trust with senior executive audiences.

About the team The Worldwide Public Sector Greenfield SA team accelerates cloud adoption for public sector customers who are new to AWS. We pair Solutions Architects with dedicated Account Executives across defined territories to create structured, proactive engagement models.
