Location: Portsmouth Naval Base – Onsite only

Salary: Circa £54,000 (dependent on skills and experience)

Role Description:

As an Assistant Project Manager within the Type 45 Power Improvement Project (PIP) team, you will support the delivery of a high-profile programme across the Type 45 destroyers. Working closely with Project Managers, delivery teams, and customer stakeholders, you will provide data-driven analysis to support decision-making, manage cost, schedule, risk, and performance, and help ensure successful programme delivery. This is a unique opportunity to play a central role in sustaining critical naval capability while driving operational excellence, continuous improvement, and strong stakeholder engagement

Core duties:

  • Support the delivery of programme activities across three ships, ensuring successful execution of embodiment changes, defect resolution, and key project deliverables.
  • Manage and maintain effective relationships with customers and internal stakeholders to support programme objectives and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor project schedules and risks, identifying potential impacts to milestones and supporting the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Lead discrete projects within a large and complex programme environment, liaising with project delivery teams and stakeholders to ensure delivery to agreed scope, cost, schedule and quality requirements whilst supporting overall programme objectives.
  • Drive cost control and value improvement initiatives, identifying efficiencies and opportunities to reduce programme expenditure.
  • Support change management activities, assessing impacts and ensuring programme delivery remains aligned with budget and business objectives.
  • Lead monthly financial and performance reporting, providing analysis and insights to support forecasting, governance, and informed decision-making.
  • Ensure effective application of project management processes, governance, and Lifecycle Management (LCM) reviews, contributing to successful programme delivery and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills:

  • You'll hold a recognised PM qualification, such as the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ), or an equivalent qualification from an appropriate professional body
  • You'll have experience managing project risks, costs, schedules, and stakeholder relationships
  • You'll have strong project coordination and planning skills
  • You'll have an analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial and programme performance data
  • You'll have an understanding of project management governance and lifecycle management processes
  • You'll be able to work collaboratively across multifunctional teams in a complex project environment

The Type 45 Power and Improvement Project (PIP) team:

The PIP (Power Improvement Project) programme team leads the contract delivery of a high‑profile capability upgrade to the Type 45 Destroyer, critical to both BAE Systems and the Royal Navy, and essential to maintaining the availability and performance of this complex and vital warship class
