Embedded Software Test Engineer (Fixed-Term)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Safety-Critical Embedded Software Test Engineer to perform independent verification of the airborne pressure sensor software. The role covers requirements-based testing, automation, structural coverage, test-tool qualification and audit-ready evidence within a DO-178C Level A programme.
This role is fully onsite and is based at our HQ in Groby, Leicestershire. This is a fixed-term role, initially for one year, with a likelihood of extension. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK. Due to the nature of the work, additional eligibility requirements may apply. The engineer will work within the software team but collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and quality control throughout the V-lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain verification plans, procedures, test cases, scripts, reports and coverage matrices in accordance with approved project and safety plans.
- Derive normal, boundary, robustness, failure-injection and timing tests from approved high- and low-level requirements and design.
- Maintain bidirectional traceability between requirements, design, tests and test results.
- Perform target-based, software-software integration, hardware-software integration, system and regression testing.
- Support statement, decision and MC/DC coverage analysis; investigate coverage gaps, dead code and unintended functionality.
- Support failure investigation and root-cause analysis.
- Conduct independent formal reviews and verification activities as per the approved plans.
- Record and verify anomalies, perform change-impact analysis, and define regression testing strategy.
- Ensure all test artefacts, tools, scripts, equipment configurations and results are reviewed, baselined and configuration controlled.
- Develop Python-based test automation, reusable libraries, test data and result-processing utilities.
- Automate the test environment, including the interface board, pressure-control equipment, power supplies and other laboratory instruments.
- Ensure traceability between approved test cases, automated scripts, software builds, test data and results.
- Support qualification of verification tools under DO-330/ED-215 and ensure tools are used within their approved or qualified scope.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Experience verifying safety-critical or high-integrity embedded software on target hardware.
- Practical knowledge of DO-178C or a comparable safety lifecycle, including requirements-based testing, independence, traceability and objective evidence.
- Python test automation and experience with embedded C/C++ and debugging.
- Experience producing and reviewing controlled test plans, procedures, cases, scripts, reports and traceability evidence.
- Knowledge of boundary-value analysis, equivalence-partition, state-transition, decision-table, robustness and fault-injection testing.
- Understanding of statement, decision and MC/DC structural coverage.
- Experience with Git/GitHub, CI workflows, defect management and controlled software baselines.
- Hands-on use of oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic/protocol analysers, programmable power supplies or automated test instruments.
- Strong technical writing, analytical, fault-isolation and evidence-based problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills
- DO-330/ED-215 software tool qualification.
- Knowledge of pressure sensors, avionics, calibration, compensation algorithms or pressure-control systems.
- Robot Framework and structural-coverage tools such as Parasoft C/C++test, LDRA or Cantata.
- Worst-case execution-time analysis using Rapita/RapiTime or a comparable tool.
- SPI, I2C, UART/RS232 and CAN.
- Experience working with IBM DOORS.
- MISRA C/C++, static analysis, hardware-in-the-loop testing and deterministic test-rig control.
- CI/CD pipeline configuration or integration using GitHub Actions.
