Job Description:
We are looking for a Senior Android Engineer to join the Store Associate Apps team at Abercrombie & Fitch. This team builds and supports the Android applications used by store associates across Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister locations worldwide.
As a Senior Android Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining business-critical mobile applications that power store operations, associate productivity, and customer experiences. You will partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, QA, Architects, and backend engineers to deliver scalable, reliable, and intuitive solutions while helping drive the technical direction of the platform.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, modernizing mobile platforms, mentoring others, and building applications that have a measurable impact on store operations.
What Will You Be Doing?
- Design, develop, test, and maintain Android applications that support in-store associate experiences and operational workflows.
- Contribute across the full software lifecycle including discovery, architecture, development, testing, release, monitoring, and ongoing support.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Store Operations, and Engineering partners to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Build reusable components and shared platform capabilities that support multiple store applications and business initiatives.
- Help define and implement Android architectural standards, coding guidelines, and engineering best practices.
- Drive application reliability, performance, security, and maintainability.
- Participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, and Agile ceremonies.
- Partner with backend, iOS, web, and enterprise teams to deliver cohesive cross-platform experiences.
- Support initiatives focused on offline resiliency, device management, payments, fulfillment, and associate productivity.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering practices to improve development efficiency and code quality.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Stay current with emerging Android technologies and recommend improvements to our platform and development practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, MIS, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 5+ years of professional Android development experience.
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin and modern Android development practices.
- Experience building and supporting production-grade Android applications.
- Experience working with Jetpack components including:
- Compose
- Navigation
- ViewModel
- State Management
- Room
- WorkManager
- Strong knowledge of Android application architecture patterns such as MVVM, Clean Architecture, or similar approaches.
- Experience integrating RESTful APIs and working with JSON data.
- Experience with asynchronous programming using Coroutines and Flow.
- Experience with Git-based source control workflows.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns, data structures, system design, and debugging techniques.
- Experience participating in Agile software development teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing enterprise or associate-facing mobile applications.
- Experience supporting applications used in retail, store operations, fulfillment, or supply chain environments.
- Experience implementing offline-first or offline-resilient mobile application features.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Bitrise, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms.
- Experience with dependency injection frameworks such as Hilt or Dagger.
- Experience with mobile analytics and monitoring tools.
- Experience working with NFC, barcode scanning, payment systems, handheld devices, or ruggedized Android hardware.
- Familiarity with modular application architectures and scalable mobile platform design.
- Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar technologies.
- Exposure to cloud-based architectures and event-driven systems.
Testing & Quality
- Experience writing unit, integration, and UI tests.
- Familiarity with JUnit, Mockito, Espresso, Compose Testing, and related Android testing frameworks.
- Strong commitment to developer-owned quality and automated testing practices.
- Experience analyzing application performance, crashes, and operational metrics.
