Job Description

U.S Bank is seeking an experienced Payments Engineer with deep expertise in global payments, wire transfer processing, and modern payment messaging standards. The ideal candidate will possess strong domain knowledge across payment networks and a proven technology background leading the design, development, and modernization of mission-critical payment platforms.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and enhance enterprise-scale payment processing platforms supporting domestic and international wire transfers.
  • Lead the implementation and integration of payment solutions across SWIFT, CHIPS, Fedwire, and ISO 20022 messaging ecosystems.
  • Architect and modernize payment systems utilizing cloud-native technologies, distributed architectures, and API-driven services.
  • Collaborate with business, operations, and technology teams to deliver resilient, secure, and scalable payment capabilities.
  • Drive payment transformation initiatives, including legacy platform modernization and migration to next-generation payment architectures.
  • Ensure payment applications meet regulatory, compliance, risk, and operational requirements across multiple payment networks.
  • Lead technical design reviews, establish engineering standards, and provide mentorship to development teams.
  • Troubleshoot complex payment processing issues, optimize system performance, and improve payment lifecycle efficiency from initiation through settlement.

Basic Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience - Five to six years of relevant experience

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Deep expertise in Global Payments, Wire Transfers, Payment Processing Platforms, and Financial Services Technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO 20022, SWIFT, CHIPS, Fedwire, Payment Messaging Standards, and Cross-Border Payments.
  • Strong understanding of Payment Operations, Clearing, Settlement, Liquidity Management, Cash Management, and Correspondent Banking.
  • Experience designing and implementing Large-Scale Payment Systems, Real-Time Payments, High-Volume Transaction Processing, and Enterprise Integrations.
  • Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, Microservices Architecture, Distributed Systems, REST APIs, and Secure Application Development.
  • Hands-on experience with Messaging Technologies including Kafka, IBM MQ, JMS, Event-Driven Architecture, and Enterprise Integration Patterns.
  • Strong knowledge of Cloud Platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), Containerization, Kubernetes, OpenShift, CI/CD Pipelines, and Cloud-Native Engineering.
  • Proven leadership in Payment Modernization, Digital Transformation, Platform Migration, Solution Architecture, Technical Strategy, and Agile Delivery.

Location expectations  This role requires working from a U.S. Bank location three (3) or more days per week.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $111,605.00 - $131,300.00
