Job Description
How you will make an impact? 
M.Fulfill Pick&Pack is part of the METRO order fulfillment landscape and focuses on the critical store and depot processes that help our customers receive the right products, at the right time, in the right condition. The solution supports the operational flow from order picking to consolidation and handover for delivery, helping teams work faster, more accurately, and with better visibility across the fulfillment chain. 
As a Java Engineer in M.Fulfill Pick&Pack, your work will directly impact the efficiency and reliability of daily warehouse and store operations. You will help build and evolve backend services that enable pickers to quickly identify, collect, and prepare goods for delivery, while ensuring that fulfillment processes remain scalable, resilient, and easy to operate.

Job Description
As part of the M.Fulfill Pick&Pack team, you will contribute across the full software engineering lifecycle — from understanding business needs and shaping technical solutions to development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement. 
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality Java backend services using clean code principles and modern engineering practices; 
- Contribute to scalable, cloud-ready microservices that support order picking, consolidation, tracking, and fulfillment operations; 
- Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and operations stakeholders to understand warehouse processes and translate them into reliable technical solutions; 
- Actively improve product quality, performance, security, observability, and operational stability through engineering ownership and continuous improvement. 
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- A good communicator and collaborative team player, open to sharing knowledge;
- Self-motivated with high quality standards – adaptable, curious, and able to take initiative; 
- Creative and analytical thinker – ability to find simplicity in complex projects and challenging the status quo;  
- Backend development: Java 11+, Spring ecosystem, microservices architecture 
- Built tools: Gradle, Maven 
- Cloud & containerization: scalable cloud-based product development, Docker, Kubernetes 
- Concurrency: Java virtual threads or Reactor 
- API & messaging: REST API design, event-driven patterns (Kafka, Pub/Sub) 
- Databases: PostgreSQL, NoSQL databases (e.g. Cassandra) 
- Testing: unit testing, integration testing, JUnit, Testcontainers 
- Version control: Git, GitHub, GitLab 
- Operating systems: Linux, macOS 
- Code quality: clean coding practices 
- Very good fluency in English (written and verbal). 
Nice to have:
- Monitoring & observability: DataDog, Kibana 
- Cloud platforms: Google Cloud Platform, other major cloud providers 
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform 
- Performance: performance tuning, JVM optimization
