Technical Writer Analyst (Aviation/Aerospace)

Location: Newport News, VA Job Type: Contract-to-Hire Pay Rate: Starting at $40.00/hour, with higher rates available based on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer Analyst with a strong background in aerospace, aviation, or avionics environments. This position combines hands-on engineering technician responsibilities with technical documentation development, supporting certification, maintenance, testing, and engineering activities.

The ideal candidate will have experience performing technical support functions such as testing, troubleshooting, inspections, and assembly, while also creating and maintaining clear, accurate, and standards-driven documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Support & Testing

  • Perform hands-on technical activities including:
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Wiring and harness installation
  • Bench testing
  • Functional verification
  • Calibration
  • Inspection of aerospace and aviation components and subsystems
  • Support test campaigns by:
  • Setting up test rigs and instrumentation
  • Gathering and analyzing test data
  • Logging and documenting results
  • Maintaining test hardware

Technical Documentation

Create, edit, and maintain technical documents including:

  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Test procedures and test reports
  • Maintenance instructions and work cards
  • Engineering Change Notices (ECNs)
  • Installation guides
  • Troubleshooting guides
  • Materials and Process (M&P) documentation

Compliance & Collaboration

  • Ensure documentation complies with applicable aerospace standards and quality requirements.
  • Translate engineering specifications, test data, and technical information into clear and structured documentation for technicians, engineers, and auditors.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and product teams to maintain technical accuracy and implement revisions.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and prepare technical summaries and corrective action reports.
  • Maintain calibration records, spare parts inventories, and laboratory safety compliance.
  • Support certification activities and audits through preparation and organization of technical documentation, evidence, and test artifacts.

Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree, technical diploma, or equivalent technical certification in:

  • Aerospace Engineering Technology
  • Avionics
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Related technical field
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Minimum 3 years of experience as an Engineering Technician in an aerospace, aviation, or avionics environment.Demonstrated technical writing experience developing:

  • Procedures
  • Test reports
  • Maintenance documentation
  • Other technical documents within a regulated industry

Familiarity with aerospace standards and regulatory requirements, including:

  • FAA
  • EASA
  • AS9100
  • DO-178
  • DO-254
  • ATA iSpec 2200 or equivalent

Hands-on experience with:

  • Mechanical assembly
  • Wiring and harnesses
  • Soldering
  • Bench testing
  • Multimeters
  • Oscilloscopes
  • Spectrum analyzers
  • Torque tools
  • Calipers

Proficiency with:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Document control systems such as SharePoint, Windchill, Teamcenter, PDM/PLM

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to diverse audiences.Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to work within schedule and regulatory constraints.Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.

Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting certification efforts and regulatory audits.Familiarity with:

  • Schematic capture
  • Basic circuit troubleshooting

Experience with authoring tools such as:

  • MadCap Flare
  • FrameMaker
  • Similar technical publishing tools
