Job Description

The Opportunity:

At Flywire, we are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer I to join our dedicated team in Australia. In this full-stack role, you will be a key contributor to our billing and payments product—which securely powers hundreds of millions of dollars in daily global money movement—making deep production-level experience with Java and Spring Boot a strict requirement. Operating with high autonomy while maintaining close collaboration with our global teams, you will help design new functionalities and elevate our core capabilities. If you are a pragmatic engineer who thrives on new challenges and balances high-quality, secure, and scalable design with the adaptability to navigate diverse client requirements, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Feature Development: Design, build, and maintain high-quality, testable, and maintainable code within our billing and payments system. You will be expected to work independently at times, making informed technical and architectural decisions while using product goals as your "North Star".
  • AI-Leveraged Exploration: Proactively uses AI tools to analyse existing codebases, answer architectural questions, and accelerate your understanding of complex system interdependencies is a must.
  • Quality & Security: Ensure that security, quality, scaling, and performance are never sacrificed for speed.
  • System Diagnostics: Regularly use diagnostic tools to resolve issues and answer technical questions quickly and calmly.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate effectively across engineering and product teams. You should be comfortable joining client meetings to assist in gathering requirements or troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving: Participate in solutioning meetings, comfortably debating the pros and cons without ego.

Technical Requirements

  • Java Proficiency: Strong, professional experience in Java development is a must.
  • Database Knowledge: Deep understanding of relational databases (MySQL) and Object-Oriented concepts.
  • Core Stack: Experience with Spring Core, Spring MVC, and Hibernate.
  • Front-End Skills: Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSP (Java Server Pages).
  • Modern Workflow: You must be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity and writing comprehensive test cases for all new code.

Qualifications

Here's what we are looking for:

  • Self-Reliant & Proactive: You are a "figure-it-out" engineer who takes ownership of tasks but knows when to approach leadership with well-formed, insightful questions.
  • Adaptable: You have the aptitude to learn new systems or legacy codebases quickly and can manage your own time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ambiguity Navigator: You can take high-level product goals and turn them into actionable technical designs without requiring constant oversight.
  • Global Collaborator: You enjoy working with diverse teams across different time zones and possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in application development.
  • Proven track record as a Java Developer in a production environment.
  • Experience in FinTech or Higher Education sectors is highly appreciated.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality code and adapt to a fast-paced, evolving environment.
