Requirements

Candidates must possess extensive software engineering experience with a strong focus on design, delivery, and operational discipline. You should have a proven track record in leadership, the ability to navigate ambiguity, and a passion for implementing AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices.

Full description

  • You are an engineering leader who can build high-performing teams, shape strong engineering practices, and lead an AI-native engineering team delivering tools and workflows used at scale.

Do work that matters

AI Powered Engineering (AIPE) develops tools and workflows that help CommBank engineers use AI safely and effectively across the software development lifecycle. The team is behind Project Coral, CommBank’s agentic engineering framework and human-supervised coding agent, designed to identify and suggest improvements to technical debt across the engineering estate.

See yourself in our team

This role is accountable for the AIPE engineering team’s system of work. You will lead the team’s development practices, engineering standards and technical hygiene, ensuring the team delivers fast, safely and with measurable impact, and role-models what it means to be a high-performing AI-native engineering team.

You will lead up to 10 engineers embedded across six squads, creating the conditions for them to do their best work. This includes coaching, feedback, growth, performance and capability uplift.

Key responsibilities

  • Own and continuously improve the AIPE engineering team’s system of work, including development practices, technical standards, engineering hygiene, operational discipline, AI-native engineering behaviours and mechanisms for measuring value.
  • Set clear standards for observability, instrumentation, agentic development, engineering quality and operational readiness, ensuring systems produce the signals needed to understand customer feedback and value.
  • Drive system-level improvements that reduce toil, improve developer experience and allow AIPE engineers to focus on solving problems for internal customers.
  • Build and embed AI-native engineering practices within the AIPE engineering team, ensuring engineers use AI responsibly, effectively and as part of everyday engineering work.
  • Use data, engineering signals and qualitative feedback to identify bottlenecks, improve development flow and lift team effectiveness.
  • Support the delivery and evolution of AI-powered engineering tools and workflows.
  • Lead, coach and grow a high-performing team of engineers, with clear expectations, regular feedback, career development and a strong product engineering mindset.
  • Create an environment of high standards, psychological safety, learning, experimentation and strong engineering craft.

We’re interested in hearing from people who

  • Have strong software engineering experience and sound judgement across design, delivery, operations and engineering practices.
  • Can lead engineers through ambiguity while maintaining clear standards, development focus and technical discipline.
  • Are passionate about AI-assisted and agentic engineering, and can turn emerging capability into practical, repeatable engineering practices.
  • Understand how to build productive engineering systems within a team, not just manage individual delivery.
  • Have a strong product engineering mindset and can connect technical decisions to customer value, feedback and measurable outcomes.
  • Are experienced people leaders who coach, grow and hold teams to a high standard.
  • Can build clarity, momentum and alignment across squads operating within one engineering team.
