Position Overview

SteerBridge is seeking a Data Scientist (Mid-Level) to support the Modern Disability Claims program. This role independently owns analytical projects from problem framing through model deployment, applying statistical modeling and machine learning to claims and healthcare data in support of VA disability claims processing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design, build, and validate statistical and machine learning models to support claims and healthcare data analysis
  • Perform exploratory data analysis and feature engineering on claims, clinical, and healthcare datasets
  • Manage assigned analytical projects from problem framing through model deployment with minimal oversight
  • Debug and resolve data pipeline, model, and analysis issues of moderate complexity
  • Begin mentoring junior data scientists on modeling techniques and coding standards
  • Collaborate with data engineers and architects to source, integrate, and validate data for modeling
  • Document model design, assumptions, performance, and validation results
  • Present findings and model results to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Contribute to sprint/team planning and provide status updates on assigned work

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Must hold, or be able to obtain, a Public Trust clearance (an active Secret or Top Secret clearance also satisfies this requirement)
  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field; Master's degree a plus
  • 3–6 years of experience in data science, statistics, or a related field; 9+ years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong proficiency in Python or R for statistical modeling and data wrangling
  • Experience with supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques (classification, regression, clustering)
  • Experience with SQL and working with large, complex datasets
  • Experience with data visualization and communicating analytical findings
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Jupyter notebooks, Git, and collaborative coding workflows
  • Experience with healthcare, claims, insurance, or federal programs
  • Familiarity with NLP or deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
  • Experience mentoring junior team members
