JOB PURPOSE / POSITION OVERVIEW
The Safety Manager serves as the senior Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) professional for assigned construction projects, business units, or operational areas. Depending on business needs, this position may be dedicated to a single large or complex project or support multiple projects across a geographic region.
The Safety Manager partners with Operations leadership to proactively identify and manage risk, ensure regulatory compliance, strengthen the Company's safety culture, and improve overall project safety performance. This position also provides guidance and mentorship to less experienced Safety team members and may assume supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Department partners with Operations and project teams to protect employees, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote safe and environmentally responsible construction practices. The department supports Building, Heavy Civil, and specialty construction operations through training, field support, compliance programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Safety Leadership
- Serve as the senior EHS representative for assigned projects or operational areas.
- Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and Operations leadership to integrate safety into project planning and execution.
- Support complex or high-risk construction activities by identifying hazards and developing practical risk mitigation strategies.
- Promote a culture of accountability, employee engagement, and continuous improvement across assigned projects.
Team Development & Collaboration
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Safety Coordinators and Safety Specialists.
- Support onboarding and development of new Safety personnel.
- Promote consistency in EHS practices across assigned projects.
- May provide functional leadership or direct supervision of Safety personnel as assigned.
Incident Investigation & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure investigations are completed timely, consistently, and in accordance with Company standards.
- Provide oversite and guidance for complex investigations and corrective action plans.
- Develop and communicate Lessons Learned to improve organizational performance.
Leadership
- Build trusted partnerships with Operations and project leadership.
- Influence safe behaviors through coaching, collaboration, and accountability.
- Mentor and develop less experienced Safety professionals.
- Foster consistency in EHS practices across assigned projects.
- May provide formal supervision of Safety personnel as assigned.
Strategic Support
- Support company-wide EHS initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
- Analyze safety metrics and recommend performance improvements.
- Participate in cross-functional committees and special projects.
Decision-Making Authority
Exercises independent judgment in evaluating complex safety issues, interpreting regulations, leading incident investigations, and recommending corrective actions. Has authority to stop work involving imminent danger and serves as a technical advisor to Operations and Safety leadership
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (KSA’s, Education, YOE)
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent combination of construction and safety experience
- 7+ years of progressively responsible construction safety experience.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing safety performance for large, complex, or multiple construction projects.
- Strong communication, coaching, and presentation skills.
- Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently
CERTIFICATIONS
Required
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- OSHA 30 Hour Construction
- CPR/First Aid certification
Preferred
- CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician)
- CSP, or actively pursuing
- OSHA 500
- Multiple Competent Person certifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS (environment, noise level, public interactions)
- Primarily field-based with frequent travel to active construction projects.
- Regular walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders and stairs, and navigating active construction sites.
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, construction equipment, noise, dust, and other jobsite hazards.
- Required use of appropriate PPE while on project sites.
- Occasional evening, weekend, or extended hours may be necessary to support project schedules or incident response.
