Full description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer based in the United States.

This is a high-impact engineering role with significant autonomy and end-to-end ownership of a modern digital health platform. You will primarily architect, build, and scale high-performance Java backend services supporting consumer-facing experiences and enterprise integrations. The role combines distributed systems engineering with healthcare interoperability, secure API development, and cloud-native infrastructure. You will work closely with engineering leadership, product, design, and external health system partners to turn complex requirements into resilient solutions. While backend engineering represents the majority of the scope, you will also contribute to JavaScript/TypeScript integrations and selected client-side workflows. The environment values thoughtful architecture, steady delivery, strong documentation, operational excellence, and pragmatic technical decision-making. This opportunity is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex integration challenges and building reliable technology in a regulated industry.

\n

Accountabilities:

  • Architect, develop, and scale core Java backend services that power consumer experiences and the broader platform ecosystem.
  • Establish end-to-end architectural ownership across distributed, high-throughput systems while balancing long-term scalability with reliable delivery.
  • Build and operate enterprise integrations with EMR/EHR platforms, including Epic/MyChart and other health systems, using HL7, FHIR, and modern interoperability patterns.
  • Develop and maintain secure REST and event-driven APIs with robust authentication, authorization, auditing, and least-privilege controls.
  • Produce clear technical documentation, including API documentation, OpenAPI specifications, system designs, and operational runbooks.
  • Contribute to JavaScript/TypeScript components, client-side workflows, and integration touchpoints representing approximately 10–20% of the role.
  • Own and improve CI/CD pipelines, automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, infrastructure-as-code, structured logging, and incident-response practices.
  • Apply modern DevOps and observability practices to maintain reliable production systems and support effective operational troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Engineering, and partner-facing teams to translate technical and business requirements into scalable, user-focused solutions.
  • Contribute to data pipelines and analytical workloads using technologies such as Databricks and Apache Spark when relevant to integration and platform needs.

Requirements:

  • 6+ years of professional experience building and operating production software, with demonstrated senior-level ownership of distributed and high-throughput systems.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java and the modern Java ecosystem, including frameworks such as Spring Boot or Quarkus, concurrency, and microservices.
  • Strong working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern client-side architectures, with the ability to support frontend integrations and UI-facing platform components.
  • Practical experience integrating with healthcare EMR/EHR systems and interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, and SMART on FHIR; experience in other highly regulated industries, such as financial technology, is also valued.
  • Experience delivering cloud-native services using AWS, Azure, or GCP, along with Docker/Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Strong understanding of application and API security, including OAuth2, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, secrets management, and secure software development practices.
  • Hands-on experience with observability practices and tooling covering metrics, distributed tracing, APM, log aggregation, and production incident triage.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create concise technical designs and clearly explain architectural trade-offs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take ownership of complex technical challenges with limited supervision.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or distributed data processing is a plus but not required.
  • Must permanently reside in the United States or Canada; no other locations are currently eligible.
  • Must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States or Canada. Visa sponsorship is not available.
  • Applicants must follow the employer's resume-file naming requirement to be considered for the position.

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation: $120,000–$160,000 USD annually for candidates working remotely in the United States.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Company-paid life insurance.
  • Company-paid short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) or RRSP savings plans with company matching, depending on location.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Employee wellness programs and resources.
  • Supportive and inclusive working environment.
  • Remote work opportunities within the United States and Canada.
