Cynergy Bank | London (Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days home) 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract | Up to £120,000 + Benefits

Lead the engineering teams building and evolving Cynergy Bank's digital platform.

The Opportunity

Cynergy Bank is investing heavily in its digital capabilities, cloud platform, and engineering function. We're looking for an experienced Head of Digital Engineering to lead one of our core engineering domains and help shape the technology that powers our customer experience and future growth.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for driving delivery across customer-facing applications, digital services, and cloud-native platforms. You will lead engineering teams, develop technical capability, and help establish the engineering standards, practices, and culture required to scale effectively.

This is a senior leadership role, but one that requires strong technical credibility. Whilst you will not be expected to code day-to-day, you should be comfortable operating close to architecture, engineering design decisions, and technical delivery, with the ability to challenge, coach, and guide engineering teams when required.

You will work closely with Product, Architecture, Information Security, and senior stakeholders across the bank to ensure technology investments deliver meaningful customer and business outcomes.

Cynergy Bank combines the innovation and pace of a challenger with the responsibility of a regulated financial institution. Success in this role will require someone who enjoys working in a dynamic environment where priorities evolve, teams collaborate closely, and leaders are expected to take ownership, make decisions, and adapt quickly as the business grows.

This role is likely to suit someone who has thrived in a challenger bank, fintech, scale-up, or similarly agile environment. Whilst experience in larger organisations can be valuable, you'll need to be comfortable operating without the layers, structure, and specialisation often found in larger enterprises. Success here comes from being adaptable, commercially minded, and comfortable leading through ambiguity.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Leading engineering teams delivering digital platforms, applications, APIs, and cloud-native services
  • Managing and developing engineering managers, team leads, and senior engineers
  • Driving delivery outcomes, platform performance, resilience, and engineering quality
  • Providing technical leadership on architecture, engineering standards, and technology direction
  • Building a high-performing engineering culture focused on collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Partnering with Product teams to align delivery with customer needs and strategic priorities
  • Driving adoption of modern engineering practices, DevOps principles, CI/CD, and automation
  • Identifying opportunities to leverage AI and automation to improve customer journeys and engineering efficiency
  • Working closely with Architecture, Risk, and Information Security to ensure secure and compliant delivery
  • Supporting engineering recruitment, capability development, succession planning, and career growth
  • Representing Engineering in wider business discussions and contributing to strategic decision-making

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Experience leading engineering managers, team leads, and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Proven experience delivering digital products and platforms at scale within cloud-native environments
  • Strong technical background with experience of modern software engineering practices and distributed architectures
  • Ability to engage at both strategic and technical levels, remaining close enough to engineering detail to effectively challenge and support teams
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders across technology and business functions
  • Strong track record of driving delivery, engineering quality, and operational performance
  • Experience working within regulated, security-conscious, or highly governed environments
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities can shift quickly in response to business, customer, or regulatory demands
  • Resilient, adaptable, and able to drive progress without perfect information
  • Experience working in smaller organisations, challenger banks, fintechs, scale-ups, or similar environments where teams operate with a high degree of ownership and autonomy

Technical Experience

Experience of technologies such as:

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Kubernetes and containerised platforms
  • CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling
  • Go
  • Flutter
  • Next.js
  • TypeScript
  • Microservices and API-driven architectures

You do not need experience with every technology listed, but you should be able to demonstrate strong technical leadership across modern engineering environments.

Why Join Cynergy Bank?

At Cynergy Bank, you'll have the opportunity to shape technology within an organisation that combines the agility of a challenger bank with the stability of an established financial institution. You'll lead a key engineering domain with direct impact on customer experience, operational performance, and future growth, working with cloud-native architectures, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, microservices, modern front-end frameworks, and AI-enabled solutions. You'll play a significant role in shaping engineering strategy, delivery practices, and technology investment decisions whilst helping develop future engineering leaders and strengthen capability across the organisation. Our hybrid working model supports flexibility, with three days in our London office and two days working from home.

What You'll Get In Return

At Cynergy Bank, you'll have the opportunity to tackle meaningful engineering challenges, influence the future of our digital platform, and see the impact of your decisions first-hand. We pair that with a reward package designed to support how you live and work today, including a salary of up to £120,000, hybrid working from day one, 28 days of annual leave, life cover worth four times your salary, access to our Employee Assistance Programme, Lifestyle Hub discounts, Cycle to Work scheme, season ticket loans, payroll giving, and an award-winning pension scheme. Following six months' service, you'll also gain access to a Health Cash Plan and annual mobile health screening. Most importantly, you'll join a team that gives talented people the autonomy, trust, and opportunity to make a genuine impact whilst helping shape the future of a growing digital bank.
