Position Summary

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. is seeking a Senior Technical Writer / Senior Technical Publications Specialist to lead the development, strategy, and execution of documentation for advanced satellite modem systems and software-defined communication platforms. This senior-level role will drive documentation architecture, influence product design through cross-functional collaboration, and ensure our global defense, government, and commercial customers can confidently install, integrate, operate, and maintain complex SATCOM equipment. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in technical content development, strong understanding of hardware and IP networking ecosystems, and the ability to work directly with engineering leadership on highly technical initiatives.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead Documentation Strategy: Own the end-to-end documentation roadmap for multiple product lines, defining standards, content structures, and scalable publication frameworks.
  • Author and Oversee Complex Documentation: Develop, edit, and govern comprehensive hardware manuals, installation guides, software/GUI/CLI documentation, API references, troubleshooting workflows, and integration guides.
  • Engineer-Level Collaboration: Partner closely with systems architects, hardware engineers, software developers, product managers, and test teams to gather highly technical product data, validate workflows, and shape documentation requirements early in development cycles.
  • Technical Visualization Leadership: Produce and review sophisticated technical illustrations, network topologies, block diagrams, wiring schematics, and multi-layer system workflows that support advanced operator procedures.
  • Documentation Lifecycle Ownership: Direct version control strategies, coordinate ECN/engineering release document reviews, and ensure alignment across firmware, software, and hardware releases.
  • Set and Enforce Enterprise Standards: Define documentation best practices, enforce compliance with industry, government, and defense standards (including MIL-STD documentation), and mentor junior writers on style, accuracy, and clarity.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Serve as a trusted advisor who influences product usability, operational clarity, and customer experience through proactive feedback and discovery.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in electronic hardware concepts, RF/L-band communication principles, satellite networking architectures, and IP routing/networking workflows.
  • Tooling & Authoring Systems: Mastery of structured authoring platforms (MadCap Flare, FrameMaker, XML/DITA environments) and advanced vector graphics tools (Visio, Illustrator).
  • Information Acquisition: Exceptional skill in interviewing senior Subject Matter Experts, interpreting complex engineering diagrams, and extracting insights from detailed technical specifications or software release notes with minimal direction.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience creating or supervising content compliant with MIL-STD or other defense publication frameworks.
  • Background documenting software deployment processes, CLI workflows, APIs, or network management systems.
  • Prior experience in defense contracting environments, secure facilities, or programs requiring classified documentation controls.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Communications, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in technical writing within telecommunications, aerospace, defense, or similarly complex engineering-driven environments.
