Full description

VALD is looking for a talented and passionate Engineering Manager to join our Engineering Team at our Brisbane-based global Headquarters.

You will play an integral role in the business's continued growth and innovation, demonstrating your skills and expertise in people management and technical leadership. We are looking for someone with a technical background who can help shape the entire Engineering team and provide leadership across technology, people and resource allocation.

People Management responsibilities:

  • 1:1s and coaching: regular check-ins with each report, mentoring, career development conversations and growth plans.
  • Performance management: feedback, calibration, and management of underperformance.
  • Team health: creating an environment where engineers can do their best work, address team challenges, and resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Recruiting & Resourcing responsibilities:

  • Own the end-to-end Engineering recruitment pipeline: including job ads, cultural screening, communication and coordination between VALD, candidates and recruiters. Product teams will conduct the technical interviews.
  • Onboarding and offboarding logistics for Engineering staff. This will involve working with the team to ensure new engineers receive effective onboarding and managing offboarding responsibly.

Engineering Leadership responsibilities:

  • Partner with Technical leads to foster engineering process improvements and technical quality investments in line with industry best practises.
  • Work with the Platform Team and Cyber Security teams to support compliance initiatives and drive follow-through within the engineering team.
  • Support post-incident reviews and follow-up actions owned, prioritised and completed

Is this you?

  • This is a people leadership and engineering management role, not a hands-on software development position. You will not be expected to regularly write production code or act as a team’s Technical Lead. Your technical background will enable you to ask effective questions, understand architecture and delivery trade-offs, support sound decision-making and hold a high bar for engineering quality.
  • Strong software engineering background with the technical credibility to engage in discussions around architecture, system design, security, quality and operational reliability. 7+ years of software development experience as an individual contributor, with a demonstrated transition into engineering leadership.
  • Passion for providing high support through coaching, mentoring, and advocating for the career progression of engineers.
  • Able to drive technical excellence, pushing for innovation and quality.
  • You possess the ability to lead through influence, building strong partnerships across Product and Engineering disciplines and contributing technical perspectives to shape shared strategy, not just align with it.
  • High-quality standards with attention to detail.
  • A desire for continuous improvement,
  • Thrive when developing phenomenal people, not just great products.

Skills and experience that are preferable but not essential

  • Experience leading teams delivering cloud-hosted Software as a Service products, preferably with Azure or other public clouds and deploying to them with infrastructure as code.
  • Experience with high-scale distributed systems, microservices and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with modern software delivery practices, including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, observability, performance tuning and incident management.
  • Experience supporting teams working across backend, web or mobile technologies.
  • Exposure to regulated, security-conscious or compliance-driven software environments. VALD is compliant with SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA and more.
  • Understanding of Agile principles.

How we operate

  • VALD’s tech stack is built and hosted on Azure in multiple geographic regions, primarily using Platform as a Service cloud resources.
  • VALD hosts .NET microservices with events.
  • VALD’s web apps are React and TypeScript.
  • VALD’s apps are primarily built in Swift, with some apps in Kotlin and WPF.
  • Stand-ups and Retrospectives.
  • Our teams include full-stack Software Engineers and product owners, who work closely with Mobile Application Engineers, Quality Assurance Engineers, UX/UI Designers, and the Product team.
  • Work from home options and flexible working hours.

What’s in it for you/perks?

  • Down-to-earth, inclusive, and vibrant team.
  • Dedicated training budget.
  • Chefs who prepare breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday.
  • On-site barista to make your coffee just as you like it.
  • Access to VALD Gym.
  • Subsidised masseuse, and access to physiotherapy & exercise physiology services.
  • Table tennis and basketball hoop.
  • End-of-trip facilities: showers, bike and scooter racks.
  • Conveniently located in Newstead, close to public transport.
