Job Description:
Title: Manager, Software Engineering
Team: Payments
Location: Remote (EST or CST). Occasional domestic and/or U.S. travel for in-person events and meetings.

As a Manager of Software Engineering, you will lead a distributed team of talented software engineers, QA professionals, and SDETs within the Payments domain. You will gain a deep understanding of the healthcare industry and learn about our users, customers, and architecture while coordinating the delivery of complex distributed software products.
You'll coordinate with the Phreesia Product Management team, architects, and engineers to help design, build, and maintain innovative payment products in our industry. You'll champion high standards for software quality, security, testing, and operational reliability while driving the adoption of AI-assisted development practices. The results of your work will improve and streamline the patient healthcare experience and healthcare providers’ ability to efficiently service and interact with their patients.
What You’ll Spend Your Time Doing
- Help recruit, onboard, and manage software engineers, QA professionals, and SDETs.
- Set clear performance expectations and provide regular feedback, coaching, and mentorship.
- Participate in roadmap planning and execution sessions with engineering and product leadership.
- Participate in the planning, coordination, and delivery of multiple concurrent workstreams, ensuring alignment across projects and initiatives.
- Monitor team execution against roadmap commitments, identifying risks, dependencies, and resource constraints.
- Provide leadership and guidance on testing strategies, quality assurance practices, and automated testing.
- Help manage escalations and unplanned work such as production defects and product requests.
- Coordinate recurring team and workstream meetings, ensuring decisions, ownership, dependencies, and follow-up actions are well understood and communicated.
- Help enable teams to deliver new functionality quickly and reliably by removing obstacles and fostering accountability and autonomy.
- Help build a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive team culture focused on high performance, continuous learning, and meaningful outcomes.
What Makes You a Great Fit
You don’t need to check every box — but this role will feel energizing if you have:
- A working knowledge of the U.S. payments ecosystem, including payment processors, card networks, ACH payments, and applicable security and compliance requirements.
- Strong technical and non-technical communication skills.
- Experience managing contractors and vendors.
- Experience rolling out and using AI tools to improve team productivity and delivery.
- Experience in people management within software engineering and a focus on growing talented employees.
We Do Have A Few Requirements To Check
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 7+ years of experience building or supporting highly distributed applications, with significant experience with Microsoft .NET/C# or Java systems connecting to databases such as SQL Server, MongoDB, and NoSQL and cloud systems.
- 3+ years of experience in people management within software engineering, with a focus on growing talented employees.
- 3+ years of experience in project management delivering successful releases.
- 3+ years of experience building or supporting software within the U.S. payments industry and payment processing.
- Experience with technologies including:
- Microsoft .NET/C#
- SQL Server, MongoDB, Redis
- Cloud systems, including Amazon Web Services and Azure
- RESTful APIs
- RabbitMQ, MSMQ, NServiceBus

- CAD $145,000 - $170,000, depending on qualifications.
