About Us
We own and develop the Dyson Link Smart home app, which is at the forefront of Dyson's IoT experience. We are proud of what we have built so far; we have an App Store and Google Play rating of 4.5 and 4.3 stars respectively, we have more than 1 million active users worldwide and our IoT platform has over 3 million connected Dyson machines. We have huge ambition to grow this platform and as we connect more machines from more categories the challenge is significant.
About the Role We are looking for a Lead Android Engineer to join our mobile team at Dyson. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with strong ownership and influence.
You will play a key role in shaping the architecture and technical direction of our Android platform, driving engineering excellence, and leading complex initiatives across teams. You are highly collaborative, thrive in ambiguity, and take pride in building scalable, maintainable systems while enabling others to do the same.
Our Tech Our app has a modular architecture and is built using the MVVM pattern. Our codebase is primarily Kotlin, with an ongoing effort to migrate remaining Java components.
We leverage modern Jetpack libraries to accelerate development and reduce boilerplate, including Navigation Component for UI flows and WorkManager for background tasks.
For networking and APIs, we use Retrofit, AWS IoT SDK, and Gson, alongside Dagger for dependency injection. Given the asynchronous nature of our application, we make extensive use of Kotlin coroutines to model and manage event streams.
Our testing stack includes JUnit and Mockito for unit testing, and Espresso with Kakao for UI testing. We continuously evaluate and adopt tools and frameworks that improve developer productivity and code quality.
What you’ll be doing
- Own and drive complex technical initiatives across the Android platform, from ideation to delivery
- Define and evolve app architecture, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability at scale
- Lead by example through hands-on development of high-quality, well-tested code
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product, design, QA, cloud, and embedded engineering to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences
- Influence technical direction and standards across the mobile team through design reviews, RFCs, and best practices
- Identify and resolve systemic issues, improving app stability, performance, and developer experience
- Mentor and guide other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing
- Evaluate and drive adoption of new tools, frameworks, and approaches to enhance engineering effectiveness
- Contribute to roadmap planning by providing technical insight, trade-offs, and delivery estimates
About You
- You are passionate about using technology to improve people's everyday environments
- You are a strong technical leader who thrives in collaborative, Agile environments
- You have 8+ years of experience building and shipping Android applications used by real customers
- You have deep expertise in Kotlin and modern Android architecture, and experience designing scalable systems
- You are highly proficient in asynchronous programming and concurrency (e.g., coroutines, flows)
- You have strong experience with testing strategies, automation, and ensuring software quality
- You have a track record of owning large features or systems end-to-end
- You are comfortable driving technical decisions and influencing stakeholders across teams
- You actively mentor others and contribute to raising the overall engineering bar
- You balance pragmatism with engineering excellence—knowing when to optimize and when to ship
- You are comfortable using AI-powered developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) to improve productivity, applying sound engineering judgment to validate outputs
