What You'll Do
The Embedded Software Engineer I writes, tests and debugs embedded software for HyPrix flight systems. The position holder works under the direction of senior engineers, and learns the full cycle from requirement to flight.
The work includes device drivers, communication interfaces, sensor and payload interfaces, power management firmware and test tools.
- Code. Write embedded C and C++ code for microcontrollers to the design and the coding standard.
- Drivers and interfaces. Write and test drivers for peripherals and buses, for example UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, ADC, PWM and timers.
- Board bring-up. Help with the bring-up of new boards. Load the firmware, check each interface and record the results.
- Unit tests. Write unit tests for each function that you write. Fix each defect that a test or a review finds.
- Code review. Submit each change for code review, and update it to the review comments.
- Debug. Find faults with a debugger, an oscilloscope and a logic analyser. Record each fault and its cause.
- Test tools. Write simple Python tools for test, data logs and firmware download.
- Integration and trial support. Support HIL tests, system integration and field trials. Download and check the logs after each test.
- Documentation. Write the design notes, interface descriptions and release notes for each change.
- Version control. Use Git for each change, and link each change to its task or requirement.
Requirements
Minimum Experience (Years)
0-2 years of embedded software work. Internships and project work on real hardware count.
HyPrix prefers this experience, but it is not mandatory. Demonstrated capability is more important than years.
Required Skills
- C programming. Good C for microcontrollers, and basic C++.
- Microcontrollers. Knowledge of MCU architecture, registers, interrupts and timers, for example on ARM Cortex-M.
- Interfaces. Knowledge of UART, SPI, I2C and CAN.
- Debug tools. Ability to use a debugger, a multimeter and an oscilloscope.
- Electronics basics. Ability to read a simple schematic and a datasheet.
- Version control. Basic use of Git.
- A bachelor's degree in electronics, electrical, computer engineering, computer science or instrumentation.
- Eligibility for background verification and security clearance. This position handles export-controlled and commercially confidential information.
Advantageous Skills/Qualifications
- Project or internship work on drones, robots, satellites or automotive ECUs.
- Experience with an RTOS, for example FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
- Experience with Python for test scripts.
- Membership of a student team, for example a drone, rocketry, satellite or Formula Student.
- Knowledge of MISRA C.
