Full description

We are seeking an accomplished and hands-on Principal C++ Architect to lead the re-architecture and modernization of a large-scale, safety-critical surgical robotics software platform. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in modern C++ software architecture, designing scalable systems, and transforming complex legacy codebases into modular, maintainable, and high-performance applications.

In this role, you will define the target architecture, establish engineering standards, mentor development teams, and collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver robust software powering next-generation surgical robotic systems used in orthopaedic, spine, and cranial procedures.

This opportunity is ideal for technology leaders who enjoy solving complex architectural challenges, driving engineering excellence, and making a direct impact on software used in mission-critical healthcare environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural redesign and modernization of a large-scale surgical robotics software platform.
  • Define the target software architecture and roadmap for migrating legacy monolithic C++ applications into modular, scalable, and maintainable systems.
  • Design robust software architecture aligned with performance, reliability, maintainability, and long-term product evolution.
  • Establish engineering standards, coding guidelines, architectural principles, and software development best practices across engineering teams.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to mid-level software engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural guidance.
  • Collaborate with product management, QA, systems engineering, DevOps, and cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Participate actively in software design, implementation, debugging, optimization, and architectural decision-making.
  • Drive software quality initiatives through static code analysis, automated testing, and continuous integration practices.
  • Ensure software architecture aligns with safety-critical development standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Support engineering teams in resolving complex technical challenges while promoting continuous improvement and innovation.

Requirements

Basic Requirements

  • 12+ years of software development experience with strong expertise in Modern C++.
  • Proven experience architecting and developing large-scale, enterprise-grade software systems.
  • Strong expertise in Qt and QML application development.
  • Deep understanding of Object-Oriented Design (OOD), SOLID principles, and software design patterns.
  • Hands-on experience modernising legacy C++ codebases into modular architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of component-based software design and integration architecture.
  • Experience working with Git-based version control and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred).
  • Familiarity with static code analysis tools and software quality practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and architectural decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and mentoring abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within distributed engineering teams while driving technical excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for medical devices, surgical robotics, or other safety-critical systems.
  • Exposure to embedded software development environments.
  • Knowledge of regulated software development processes and quality standards.
  • Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of software performance optimization, scalability, and system integration.
  • Experience leading architectural transformation initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Electronics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Passion for engineering excellence, continuous learning, and building world-class software systems that improve patient outcomes.
