Overview
As a Lead Embedded Software Engineer at Glassboard, you will own the technical direction and delivery of firmware and embedded software programs from concept through commercialization. Beyond hands-on development and implementation, you will manage a team of embedded software engineers across multiple concurrent programs, own client relationships at a strategic level, and help shape how Glassboard's embedded software practice grows. This role reports to the CTO and works in close cooperation with the hardware engineering team as well as the rest of the Glassboard product development team.
Major Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee coding standards, source control practices, and embedded software best practices across the team
- Drive firmware development for performance, scalability, robustness, and tight hardware integration
- Translate high level customer requirements into technical specifications, and guide other
- Lead client communications and program management, including scoping, timeline ownership, and program financials
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of embedded software engineers, including workload allocation across concurrent programs
- Partner with leadership on hiring, performance reviews, and career development planning for the embedded software team
- Contribute to proposals and scoping for prospective embedded software engineering work
- Help define and improve internal embedded software processes, tools, and best practices
- Architect, develop, and debug real-time firmware in C, with final review authority on architecture and code across your programs
- Specify, design, and implement functionality and behaviors of embedded subsystems, and guide other engineers in doing the same

Education and Experience
- Minimum 8 years of experience in an engineering or product development focused field, including prior experience managing engineers or programs
- Bachelor's Degree in EE/CE/EET/CET or Computer Science preferred, or equivalent experience
- Consumer, medical, automotive, or industrial product development experience a plus
Required Skills
- Direct experience developing embedded hardware using Linux, RTOS, or bare metal
- Familiarity with common hardware level communications such as USB, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C, etc.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor a team of engineers across multiple concurrent projects
- Strong program management skills, including scoping, scheduling, and client facing communication
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment, balancing hands on technical work with team leadership
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience with version control tools such as Git or SVN
- Familiarity with real-time debuggers like Segger J-Link
- Familiarity with schematics, basic electronic components, and connections
- Demonstrated experience in hiring, coaching, or performance management of engineering staff
- Project and budget management experience
Desired Skills
- Experience with Embedded Linux build systems such as Yocto or Buildroot
- Experience with Android AOSP and Soong build system
- Experience coding in JavaScript, Python, and C++ a plus
- Familiar with IDEs such as Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, Keil, IAR, etc.
- Understanding of power electronics and battery management systems
- RF testing experience and experience with regulatory certification and testing (FCC, CE, UL, IEC)
- Experience working with wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, LTE, LoRa, Wi-Fi, etc.
- Prior experience building or scaling an engineering team or department
