About the Role:

The Lead DevOps Engineer will drive the technical strategy and architecture for the department's automation platforms, infrastructure automation capabilities, self-service engineering solutions, and containerization initiatives. This role blends deep technical ownership with team leadership, driving the modernization of infrastructure automation and self-service capabilities while mentoring engineers and partnering with stakeholders to align platform capabilities with business needs.

The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating, designing, implementing, and evolving automation and self-service solutions, whether commercial, open-source, or internally developed, to improve operational efficiency, scalability, and reliability across the organization. This role requires flexibility to work shifting schedules to support cross-timezone collaboration.

The Lead DevOps Engineer will work closely with leadership, Development Teams, and IT Operations to shape the technical roadmap for automation, infrastructure provisioning, self-service engineering capabilities, and container platforms across the organization.

Job Duties in Brief:

• Own the technical strategy and architecture for the department's automation, infrastructure provisioning, and self-service engineering platforms.

• Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of self-service capabilities that empower teams to request, provision, and manage IT services efficiently.

• Design and manage enterprise automation platforms and workflow orchestration solutions, identifying and delivering high-value automation opportunities.

• Establish and govern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices (e.g., Terraform) for on-premises and cloud environments, defining standards, reusable components, and best practices.

• Own the technical strategy for containerization initiatives, leading Kubernetes adoption and workload migrations across teams

• Design and implement GitOps workflows and practices, driving standardization of deployment models across the department

• Architect and manage AWS infrastructure (EC2, S3, Lambda, IAM, VPC, CloudWatch) to support scalable, resilient, and cost-effective solutions

• Design and build serverless automation solutions using AWS Lambda to reduce manual operational overhead

• Develop and maintain automation frameworks, integrations, and APIs that connect self-service platforms, orchestration tools, provisioning systems, and backend services.

• Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex automation and platform issues; lead root cause analysis and drive permanent fixes

• Mentor and coach mid-level and junior engineers; provide technical guidance, code/design reviews, and career development support

• Partner with stakeholders across development and operations teams to translate business and operational needs into scalable automation and self-service capabilities.

• Own architecture documentation, runbooks, and knowledge base standards for automation and containerization practices

• Contribute to capacity planning, cost optimization, and tooling/vendor decisions

• Support hiring and technical interviews for the teams

About You:

You are a seasoned DevOps or Platform Engineer who has moved beyond hands-on execution into owning technical strategy and leading teams through modernization efforts. You have deep expertise in automation platforms, infrastructure provisioning, self-service engineering solutions, Kubernetes, and AWS, and you're passionate about reducing operational complexity through scalable automation and platform engineering practices.

You are comfortable evaluating, implementing, and evolving a variety of technologies, whether open-source, vendor-provided, or custom-developed, and can balance short-term business needs with long-term platform strategy. You naturally mentor others, elevate technical standards across the team, and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Experience and Technical Skills

• 7+ years of professional hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, DevOps engineering, or platform engineering, including experience leading or mentoring within a team

• Strong experience with automation platforms such as Rundeck (or equivalent job orchestration tools), self-service portal design, and workflow automation

• Advanced experience with Terraform including on-premises provisioning use cases; ability to define IaC standards, design reusable modules, and guide teams on best practices

• Experience designing and delivering self-service platforms/portals for IT Operations or internal engineering teams (NexOps or similar)

• Strong, hands-on expertise with Kubernetes architecture, deployment, Helm charts, networking, storage, and leading workload migrations to containers

• Strong AWS background, especially EC2, S3, Lambda, IAM, VPC, CloudWatch; ability to architect and optimize cloud infrastructure at scale

• Strong experience designing and implementing GitOps workflows (ArgoCD, Flux, or similar) for Kubernetes deployments

• Strong experience with Jenkins or similar CI/CD tooling — pipeline design, scaling, and optimization

• Strong scripting/automation experience (Python, Bash); proven track record building automation frameworks and API integrations that reduce operational toil

• Solid Linux/Unix administration background; strong understanding of networking and system fundamentals

• Experience with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch) to support automation platforms and container initiatives

• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving resolution on complex, cross-system issues

• Strong communication skills; experience presenting technical decisions and roadmaps to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and elevating team technical capability

• Willingness and flexibility to work shifting schedules to support cross-timezone collaboration

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent hands-on experience

• Relevant certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate) are a plus but not required
