Position details

The Senior Database Engineer is responsible for the engineering, administration, reliability, automation, and operational support of enterprise database platforms, with primary responsibility for Microsoft SQL Server and secondary support for IBM DB2 environments. 

The role focuses on ensuring database services are secure, highly available, resilient, performant, and compliant with MUFG technology standards. The incumbent will drive Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices, operational excellence, automation, observability, and continuous service improvement while supporting critical business applications across the Bank. 

This position works closely with Infrastructure, Application, Cyber Security, Cloud, and Service Management teams to maintain stable and reliable database services and support the Bank's operational resilience objectives.

Key Responsibilities 

Database Engineering & Platform Operations 

  • Lead the implementation, administration, maintenance, and support of Microsoft SQL Server database platforms. 
  • Provide secondary operational support for IBM DB2 database environments. 
  • Manage database lifecycle activities including installation, patching, upgrades, migrations, backup, and recovery. 
  • Maintain database platform standards, operational procedures, and technical documentation. 
  • Support database modernization and automation initiatives to improve operational efficiency and service quality. 
  • Implement and maintain enterprise database monitoring and alerting capabilities. 
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, middleware, cloud, and application teams to ensure stable platform operations. 
  • Support cloud-hosted and hybrid database environments where applicable. 

2. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) & Service Reliability 

  • Champion Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles to improve platform stability, scalability, and operational resilience. 
  • Define, monitor, and improve Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and operational reliability metrics. 
  • Drive reduction of operational toil through automation and process optimization. 
  • Implement proactive monitoring, observability, capacity management, and predictive operational practices. 
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for major incidents and ensure remediation actions are implemented. 
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service availability and reduce recurring incidents. 
  • Develop reliability dashboards and reporting to measure platform health and service performance. 
  • Participate in disaster recovery testing, operational resilience exercises, and recovery validation activities. 

3. Performance Management & Optimization 

  • Monitor and optimize database performance to meet business and operational requirements. 
  • Conduct database health assessments, capacity planning, and performance analysis. 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database performance and availability issues. 
  • Optimize database configurations, indexing strategies, query performance, and resource utilization. 
  • Ensure database platforms consistently meet availability, recovery, and performance targets. 
  • Support implementation of high availability and disaster recovery technologies. 

4. Security, Risk & Compliance 

  • Implement and maintain database security controls in accordance with MUFG security standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Manage database access controls, encryption, authentication, and privileged access requirements. 
  • Support remediation of database vulnerabilities and security findings. 
  • Ensure compliance with technology risk, cybersecurity, data protection, and operational resilience policies. 
  • Support internal, external, and regulatory audits through evidence collection and remediation activities. 
  • Coordinate audit responses and closure of database-related findings. 
  • Support major incident management and crisis recovery activities as required. 

5. Production Support & Service Management 

  • Provide Level 3 production support for critical database services. 
  • Lead investigation and resolution of high-priority incidents and service disruptions. 
  • Participate in Incident, Change, Problem, and Request Management processes. 
  • Support production releases, maintenance activities, and platform upgrades. 
  • Drive reduction of recurring incidents through automation and preventive controls. 
  • Collaborate with application support teams to improve service stability and operational effectiveness. 
  • Ensure operational procedures are documented, maintained, and regularly reviewed. 

6. Automation & Continuous Improvement 

  • Develop and maintain automation solutions using PowerShell, Python, Shell scripting, or approved automation platforms. 
  • Improve efficiency through automated monitoring, provisioning, patching, compliance validation, and operational reporting. 
  • Identify opportunities to simplify processes, reduce operational risks, and enhance service quality. 
  • Promote standardization, automation, and engineering best practices across database operations. 
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives aligned with infrastructure platform objectives. 

Experience 

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in database engineering, administration, and production support within enterprise environments. 
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server platforms in large-scale environments. 
  • Working experience supporting IBM DB2 database environments. 
  • Experience managing mission-critical production platforms with high availability and resilience requirements. 
  • Experience implementing SRE practices, operational monitoring, automation, and disaster recovery processes. 
  • Experience supporting financial services or highly regulated environments is preferred. 
  • Proven experience leading complex troubleshooting, incident management, and service recovery activities. 
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues related to performance, connectivity, and security.
