JOB TITLE: Golang Lead Engineer

SALARY: £84,624 - £128,580 (dependent on location and expereince)

LOCATION(S): London and Bristol

HOURS: Full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of your time, at one of our office sites.

About this opportunity

We are looking for a Golang Lead Engineer to lead the technical development and delivery of backend services that are reliable, secure, scalable and easy to operate!

This role sits within Software Engineering and offers the opportunity to shape the Group's Mobile Security Core and wider backend capabilities. You'll combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership, helping teams build high-quality Go services, APIs, integrations and deployment pipelines while driving engineering excellence across delivery teams!

As a senior technical leader, you'll:

• Lead the design, build, release and support of complex backend services and shared platform capabilities.
• Drive engineering quality through code reviews, technical leadership, reusable patterns and modern software engineering practices.
• Build resilient, observable and secure services that perform effectively in production environments.
• Partner with Product Owners, Architects, Engineers, SREs and Security specialists to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Mentor engineers, support capability growth and contribute to engineering communities and standards.
• Champion automation, operational excellence, reliability, secure coding and continuous improvement.

What you'll need

• Strong Software Engineering expertise, with significant experience building and operating production backend services in Go, including testing, concurrency, code quality and maintainable service design.
• Experience designing and delivering microservices, APIs, integrations and distributed systems, balancing performance, resilience, security and maintainability.
• Strong DevOps and operational engineering capability, including CI/CD, automated testing, release practices and production support.
• Experience building and operating containerised services, with knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker and modern cloud deployment approaches.
• Strong leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to mentor engineers, guide technical decisions and lead delivery through ambiguity.
• Excellent critical thinking, decision making and stakeholder collaboration skills, with the ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly and influence outcomes. The Skills Taxonomy identifies relevant skills including Software Engineering, DevOps, SRE & Service Engineering, Technology Leadership, Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Coaching & Feedback and Stakeholder Management.

And any experience of this would be really useful

• Experience modernising legacy applications into well-owned backend services.
• Experience within a regulated financial services environment or other large-scale enterprise organisation.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Azure, OpenShift, platform engineering capabilities or internal developer platforms.
• Experience using AI tools responsibly to support software development, testing, documentation or operational activities.
