Some careers shine brighter than others.

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC and fulfil your potential. Whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Senior Consultant Specialist

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the design and development of workflow integration services for Fraud and Credit journeys using Java, Spring Boot, and J2EE patterns.
  • Deliver workflow automation using Flowable and Activiti, including BPMN modelling, orchestration of multi-step processes, event correlation, and long-running process management.
  • Implement predominantly straight-through processing (STP) workflows with defined manual review checkpoints (e.g., referral queues), ensuring smooth transitions between automated and human tasks.
  • Design and implement decisioning and policy logic using Drools, covering rule authoring, testing, versioning, and controlled rollout with clear separation from application/process code.
  • Build and maintain secure, reliable RESTful APIs and integrations to fraud/credit components, with strong contract management, idempotency, and robust error handling.
  • Engineer fraud/credit workflow patterns including exception handling, compensations, retries, timeouts, SLAs, escalation paths, and end-to-end audit traceability across automated and manual steps.
  • Design and optimise database interactions using PostgreSQL, ensuring data integrity, performance, and appropriate transactional behaviour for workflow-heavy workloads.
  • Drive engineering quality and delivery discipline through code reviews, automated unit/integration testing, Maven-based build/dependency management, and GIT source control aligned to HSBC SDLC expectations.
  • Ensure solutions meet resilience, security, and observability needs (logging, monitoring, metrics/tracing) and are production-ready with operational documentation.
  • Provide technical leadership within the squad, supporting delivery through production and BAU (release readiness, incident/problem management, RCA, continuous improvement) and collaborating with architecture, QA, ops, and risk/control partners.

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Strong hands-on experience building enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and J2EE technologies.
  • Proven workflow automation experience with Flowable and/or Activiti (BPMN modelling, orchestration, process versioning, and supportability).
  • Hands-on experience with Drools (rule authoring, testing, governance/versioning, and integration with services/workflows).
  • Strong SQL and relational database skills, including the ability to write and tune queries (PostgreSQL preferred).
  • Strong experience delivering API integrations (REST) including authentication/authorisation patterns, versioning, idempotency, and error handling.
  • Experience with SDLC tooling and engineering discipline (GIT, Maven, code reviews, automated unit/integration testing).
  • Experience delivering scalable, efficient solutions in a regulated environment; banking/financial services experience preferred.
  • Good-to-have exposure to microservices/distributed systems and event-driven patterns, CI/CD and containerisation, observability (metrics/logs/tracing), and performance engineering for high-throughput/long-running workflow platforms.
