Full description

The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst, NEJM Clinician, and through our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work – at home, onsite in our Waltham office, or a combination of the two – based on their preferences and our business needs. Because what matters is the work we do, not where we do it.

The Manager, Site Reliability Engineering leads the SRE team responsible for the reliability, availability, and performance of MMS production, software delivery, and business systems. This role combines people leadership with hands-on technical decision-making and oversees the automation, observability, and self-service capabilities that enable teams to deliver solutions safely and efficiently.

The Manager sets priorities, plans team capacity, leads incident response and continuous improvement, and advances the organization's reliability roadmap in partnership with Cloud Architecture, Cybersecurity, Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), and other stakeholders. The successful candidate brings clarity and direction in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable balancing long-term technical strategy with urgent operational needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Lead the SRE reliability roadmap, including prioritization, capacity planning, backlog management, and stakeholder communication.

  • Partner with Cloud Architecture on infrastructure and architectural decisions and advance resilient, scalable, and self-healing design patterns.

  • Lead incident response and communications, including classification, escalation, technical resolution, postmortems, and tracking corrective actions through completion.

  • Partner with Cybersecurity and GRC to implement practical security, compliance, business continuity, and disaster-recovery controls that support reliable operations.

  • Establish and monitor SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets aligned with business and operational priorities.

  • Manage technical vendor escalations for business systems and third-party platforms.

  • Lead the organization's observability capability, including instrumentation standards, alerting thresholds, monitoring coverage, and performance reporting.

  • Oversee CI/CD architecture, deployment standards, release engineering, and reusable self-service capabilities that enable teams to deliver safely and independently.

People and Project Management

  • Manage, coach, and develop the SRE team, setting clear expectations and fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Oversee the health and effectiveness of the 24/7 on-call program, including schedules, runbooks, escalation paths, and paging practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least six years of experience in software development, DevOps, SRE, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least two years of experience directly managing an SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering team.

  • Hands-on experience with hybrid cloud environments and Linux and Windows systems.

  • Strong experience designing CI/CD pipelines, such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins, and using infrastructure-as-code tools, such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise observability tools, such as Datadog, New Relic, or Prometheus.

  • Experience with security and compliance practices, containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, and scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell.

  • Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize work, collaborate in an Agile environment, and use tools such as Jira and Confluence.

  • Experience designing resilient, self-healing systems and automated recovery strategies.

  • Experience with API management platforms; MuleSoft experience is a plus.

Compensation:

The target base pay for this role is between $160,000-$175,000. Salary is commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience.

Benefits:

Our generous benefits offerings include: 3 weeks of paid vacation, 6 personal days, 12 sick days, 13 paid holidays, medical and dental plans, 401(k) plans with company match, back-up childcare assistance, tuition assistance and more!
