About our opportunity
Are you passionate about turning complex data into meaningful insights that drive better business decisions? Do you enjoy solving problems, challenging the status quo, and helping organisations unlock the true value of their data?
We’re looking for a Senior Data Analyst to join our Commercial Department and play a key role in shaping our data-driven future.
Working closely with our Data Analytics Manager, Data Engineers, and stakeholders across the business, you’ll identify opportunities to use data to improve commercial performance, support better decision-making and deliver measurable business benefits.
Combining strong technical expertise with commercial awareness, you’ll transform complex datasets into clear, actionable insights using SQL, data visualisation, and advanced analytical techniques. You’ll build relationships across the organisation, influence stakeholders and help embed a culture where data is at the heart of how we make decisions.
This is an exciting opportunity to use your analytical expertise to influence business strategy, drive continuous improvement and contribute to our wider ambitions around People, Profit and Planet.
What you’ll be doing
- Delivering commercial insight: Partnering with teams across the business to understand challenges, identify opportunities and develop data-driven solutions that improve performance and support commercial decision-making.
- Turning data into action: Analysing complex datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and opportunities, translating your findings into clear recommendations that stakeholders can understand and act upon.
- Developing reporting and analytics: Building and maintaining insightful reports and dashboards using tools such as Tableau or Power BI, while identifying opportunities to improve reporting capabilities and analytical processes.
- Improving our data capabilities: Working closely with Data Engineers to develop, enhance and curate datasets, bringing together relevant internal and external data sources to support business needs.
- Leading analytical projects: Taking ownership of analytical projects from understanding business requirements through to delivering insights and supporting the implementation of recommendations.
- Influencing and collaborating: Building strong relationships across Commercial, Operations, Finance, Marketing and other departments, helping stakeholders understand the value of data and embrace better ways of working.
- Exploring new technologies: Applying advanced analytical techniques, statistical modelling, machine learning and AI to solve complex business challenges and uncover new opportunities.
- Championing data quality and governance: Promoting data accuracy, consistency, and security, ensuring data is used responsibly and in line with relevant governance, ethical and data protection standards.
- Driving continuous improvement: Keeping up to date with developments in data analytics, visualisation and emerging technologies, identifying innovative ways to strengthen our data capabilities.
Throughout everything you do, you’ll ensure our three pillars – People, Profit and Planet – remain central to your approach and decision-making.
About you
You’re a naturally curious and commercially minded analyst who enjoys getting to the heart of a problem, asking the right questions, and using data to make a real difference. You’re confident working with complex datasets, but just as importantly, you know how to turn technical findings into meaningful insights that influence decisions and deliver results.
You’ll bring a combination of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills, alongside the confidence to challenge existing approaches and build relationships across the business.
What you’ll bring:
- Strong SQL and programming skills, particularly in Python, with experience working with complex datasets from multiple sources.
- Experience developing reports and interactive dashboards using data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Power BI or equivalent.
- Advanced analytical, statistical, and modelling skills, with the ability to identify trends, solve complex problems and translate findings into actionable insights.
- Practical experience applying machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to real-world business challenges.
- A track record of delivering data-driven solutions that support business improvement and measurable commercial outcomes.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and present insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and bring people along with you.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to understand business priorities and align analytical solutions to organisational objectives.
- Knowledge of cloud-based analytics environments, modern data technologies, and contemporary approaches to data management.
And just as importantly, you’ll be someone who:
- Has a curious and inquisitive mindset, with a genuine passion for uncovering insights and solving complex problems.
- Is an innovative thinker who challenges existing ways of working and looks for better, smarter ways to do things.
- Is collaborative and relationship-focused, able to work effectively with colleagues across different teams and disciplines.
- Demonstrates ownership, accountability, and a results-driven approach, taking responsibility for delivering meaningful outcomes.
- Is resilient and adaptable, comfortable working in a changing environment and managing competing priorities.
- Is committed to continuous learning, sharing knowledge and helping build a stronger data-driven culture across the organisation.
Experience within commodity trading, recycling, manufacturing, logistics or a related industry would be advantageous, but above all, we’re looking for someone who can combine technical excellence with commercial thinking and a passion for making data work harder for the business.
Who we are:
The products we’ll all need tomorrow depend on us making the most of today’s end-of-life metals, plastics and other materials.
Take a car at the end of its life - most people just see a…car at the end of its life.
We see steel, aluminium, copper, plastics, rubber, glass, parts, fluids, costs, risks, markets and – most importantly - possibilities.
Now, multiply that by thousands of cars – we recover, reuse and recycle all those valuable materials and put them back to work as low-carbon materials for manufacturing, infrastructure, energy and transport.
And that’s just one thing we recycle. Add buildings, factories, ships, railways and industrial equipment. That’s all our hard work – the gritty, practical, commercial, difficult work our 4,000 global colleagues do every day.
Anything from a can to an aircraft carrier can become anything from a bicycle to a building and, at the same time, we help to avoid 19 million tonnes of carbon and 10 million tonnes of waste to landfill, protecting nature, resources and the next generation’s future.
Which is all well and good for us to say, but this is what the real people behind the really hard work think:
“The people who work here are from varied backgrounds and have a variety of beliefs, all of which are accepted and respected.”
“I’m encouraged to keep a healthy work-life balance so that I can be performing at my best.”
“I’ve been supported every step of the way in my career progression.”
‘‘EMR offers a fantastic and inclusive environment; collaboration across the whole business, humility and hard work.”
Four years as a certified Great Place To Work is no small feat. Oh, and don’t forget one of the UK’s Best Workplaces in Manufacturing, Production and Transportation. That’s pretty good too.
But we can do better. We’re aiming for a place in the top 60 companies in the UK – not for the accolade but for the improvement. A journey you should probably join us for.
If you want to be part of something bigger than yourself, have a role that really makes a difference and work with likeminded people towards the same purpose, this is the role for you.
Recruitment Agencies We operate a strict Preferred Supplier List (PSL) and do not accept speculative CVs. Any unsolicited CVs, whether related to a specific position or submitted speculatively, will not be considered.
