Role purpose

Deliver part of the Syngenta capital investment program by:

  • Direct management of engineering capital and significant repair and maintenance projects; ensuring the timely implementation of new or improved assets consistent with business requirements and within agreed cost and safety parameters.
  • Providing expert advice and direction to others by the timely application of technical and/or project management professionalism at key points in the project process.
  • Through close liaison with finance, Procurement, legal, SPR, process engineers, automation engineers and key stakeholders, ensure that capital projects use fit-for-purpose engineering solutions and meet Syngenta HSE requirements. 

Job Description

Through a clear understanding of the business strategy, intent, or requirements:

  • Manage projects directly: Agree, set, and achieve challenging success criteria for projects and formulate and deliver project execution strategies to achieve delivery through a project team composed mainly of third parties (e.g. Syngenta staff, design and construction contractors and equipment suppliers)
  • Work with project owners to shape project scope. This often requires holding large areas of ambiguity before a project scope is finalised in a Terms of Reference
  • Define, estimate, deliver, track, and report safety, costs, and physical progress of individual capital projects
  • Prepare robust, timely applications for engineering capital approvals and project completion reports
  • Ensure full integration between commissioning and start-up activities and the design and construction phases of projects
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the engineering requirements for seed projects (R&D, P&S, VEG, and other business units of the company)
  •  *Provide cutting-edge engineering solutions for use throughout Syngenta. *A particular engineering specialism (e.g., AI Projects, Seeds Projects, GE Projects)
  • Provide support for both annual and 5-year capital & expense planning for local sites and business units, including cost estimates, business case development, and schedule development

Qualifications

  • University degree (BS min or equivalent) in chemical/industrial engineering, electrical engineering mechanical engineering, agricultural engineering/biology/agronomy/food science
  • At least 5 years of experience
  • Demonstrates experience in operational manufacturing sites and construction
  • Leading a high-performance project team of internal and external resources
  • Engineering for a range of facility types (e.g., manufacturing, processing, commercial, laboratory)
  • Country legal and compliance requirements
  • Understanding risk in engineering activity
  • Setting appropriate standards
  • Understanding the external supply base
  • Contracting for engineering services
  • Management of engineering suppliers and contractors
