Job Description:

Parsons is looking for a talented and experienced Transportation Systems Data Engineer to join our team! In this role you will get to work closely with transportation engineers, data scientists, systems engineers, and software developers to develop state of the art technology-based transportation solutions.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Develop transportation data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence solutions that support traffic operations, safety analysis, incident management, and transportation system performance.
  • Process and analyze large-scale transportation datasets, including connected vehicle, telematics, traffic sensor, weather, crash, work zone, camera, and vehicle trajectory data.
  • Design, develop, and maintain batch and streaming data pipelines that support transportation analytics, machine learning, visualization, and operational applications.
  • Develop cloud-based data architectures and workflows using platforms and services such as AWS, GCP, Oracle Cloud, Databricks, and S3.
  • Develop, train, test, and evaluate machine learning and computer vision models for applications such as lane closure detection, traffic-scene analysis, safety monitoring, and automated video analytics.
  • Create interactive dashboards and decision-support tools using Tableau, Power BI, R Shiny, or similar visualization platforms.
  • Integrate transportation data from multiple systems and sources into unified analytics and traffic operations platforms.
  • Develop and evaluate models using Python, SQL, R, and related data science and big-data technologies.
  • Translate transportation data and analytical results into clear technical findings, visualizations, reports, and recommendations for transportation agencies and system operators.
  • Collaborate with transportation engineers, software developers, researchers, agency stakeholders, and technology specialists throughout solution design, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, research papers, presentations, proposals, and project documentation.
  • Participate in Agile and Scrum development processes, including requirements definition, sprint planning, peer reviews, testing, and technical demonstrations.

What Required Skills You'll Bring:

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (or related field) and 5+ years of related work experience.
  • Experience analyzing transportation, connected vehicle, traffic operations, safety, telematics, or other large-scale mobility datasets.
  • Experience developing data pipelines and working with cloud-based data processing and storage platforms.
  • Experience developing dashboards, data visualizations, or analytical applications that communicate technical results to end users.
  • Demonstrated participation and leadership in transportation research, technical organizations, professional associations, or industry conferences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams.

What Desired Skills You'll Bring:

  • Understanding of transportation engineering, traffic operations, connected vehicle applications, traffic safety, and intelligent transportation systems.
  • Experience processing large-scale datasets using technologies such as Polars, SQL, or distributed cloud-computing services.
  • Experience with AWS services such as S3, Glue and Athena, or equivalent services within GCP, Oracle Cloud, or other cloud environments.
  • Experience developing interactive dashboards and applications using Tableau, Power BI, R Shiny, or similar tools.
  • Experience developing machine learning models using classification, object detection, computer vision, or large-language-model techniques.
  • Experience integrating telematics, weather, crash, work zone, traffic sensor, connected vehicle, and camera data for transportation applications.
  • Experience with video-processing pipelines, traffic-scene description, visual question answering, or fine-tuning large-language and vision-language models.
  • Knowledge of GitHub, Agile, Scrum, and collaborative software-development practices.
  • Ability to independently investigate complex transportation problems, develop practical analytical solutions, and communicate results to technical and nontechnical audiences.
