Responsibilities

This is an onsite position based in Billings, Montana, working closely with local engineering and operations teams to support DWDM, photonics, and optical transport infrastructure across the network.

The Network Engineer will support the design, expansion, provisioning, and operation of a carrier-grade optical transport network. This position will focus primarily on DWDM, photonics, and optical transport technologies and will play a key role in the continued growth and modernization of the network.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working with optical transport platforms and will be comfortable independently supporting projects from initial design and planning through provisioning, turn-up, troubleshooting, and network expansion.

In addition, you will:

  • Design and support DWDM and optical transport network solutions for new builds, upgrades, and network expansion projects
  • Plan and provision optical circuits, wavelengths, and transport services across the network
  • Support installation, turn-up, testing, and activation of optical transport equipment
  • Troubleshoot complex optical network issues involving wavelengths, transponders, amplifiers, ROADMs, fiber paths, and related transport equipment
  • Perform optical power analysis and assist with identifying signal degradation, loss, and other photonic-layer issues
  • Support deployment and expansion of Ciena 6500 optical transport systems and related technologies
  • Work with field technicians and other engineering personnel to resolve network issues and complete equipment upgrades
  • Develop and maintain network documentation, engineering plans, procedures, and technical records
  • Assist with capacity planning and identify opportunities for network optimization and expansion
  • Provide technical guidance and support to operations and field personnel
  • Visit network and field locations as needed to support implementation, troubleshooting, and expansion activities
  • Assist with other duties as assigned

Qualifications

About You:

  • Strong hands-on experience with DWDM, photonics, and carrier-grade optical transport networks
  • Experience supporting the full optical network lifecycle, including design, planning, provisioning, implementation, turn-up, troubleshooting, and expansion
  • Experience with Ciena optical transport equipment, preferably the Ciena 6500 platform, strongly preferred
  • Experience with comparable optical transport platforms such as Nokia, Infinera, Cisco Optical, ADVA, or similar equipment may be considered
  • Working knowledge of optical technologies including ROADM, OTN, coherent optics, wavelengths, transponders, EDFA/Raman amplification, and optical power budgets
  • Ability to troubleshoot optical transport issues using network management systems, alarms, performance data, and optical test results
  • Ability to independently analyze complex network problems and develop practical solutions
  • Experience developing network designs, engineering documentation, Method of Procedures (MOPs), or implementation plans
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with engineering, operations, and field teams
  • Ability to travel to field locations as needed
  • Experience supporting telecommunications, broadband, carrier, utility, or other large-scale optical networks preferred
