Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior WordPress Engineer / Technical Lead to take technical ownership of the organization's WordPress-based websites and digital platforms. The role is responsible for development, architecture, maintenance, performance, security, deployment, and infrastructure management of multiple WordPress websites hosted on WP Engine. The successful candidate will work closely with Creative, UX/UI, Marketing, Content, SEO, and business teams to translate approved designs and requirements into high-quality, responsive, scalable, and maintainable WordPress experiences. This is a hands-on technical role spanning WordPress development, hosting, deployment, troubleshooting, performance optimization, integrations, and security.

Responsibilities

WordPress Development & Engineering

  • Take technical ownership of multiple WordPress websites.
  • Develop and maintain custom WordPress themes and components.
  • Convert Figma/Adobe XD/other approved designs into responsive WordPress pages.
  • Build reusable Gutenberg blocks, templates, components, and page layouts.
  • Customize WordPress themes and plugins where required.
  • Develop custom plugins and functionality when off-the-shelf plugins are not appropriate.
  • Ensure clean, maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Follow WordPress coding standards and modern web development practices.
  • Ensure websites work consistently across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex WordPress/PHP issues.

Creative Design → Website Implementation

  • Work directly with the Creative/UX team to understand Figma and other design specifications.
  • Translate designs into production-ready WordPress experiences.
  • Ensure pixel-accurate implementation where required.
  • Build reusable design components rather than creating one-off pages.
  • Identify technical limitations early and propose practical alternatives.
  • Maintain consistency across websites and pages.
  • Ensure new designs do not negatively impact existing functionality.

WP Engine Infrastructure & Administration

  • Own the technical administration of the WordPress environment on WP Engine.
  • Manage site/environment configuration and production, staging, and development environments.
  • Manage deployments and release processes.
  • Coordinate DNS and domain configuration.
  • Manage SSL/certificate requirements.
  • Manage backups and restoration procedures.
  • Configure caching and CDN capabilities where applicable.
  • Monitor performance and website health.
  • Manage WordPress/PHP version upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot hosting-related issues and coordinate with WP Engine support when required.
  • Monitor uptime and overall website health.

Performance Optimization

  • Monitor website performance and Core Web Vitals.
  • Optimize WordPress/PHP/database performance.
  • Identify slow plugins, queries, scripts, and third-party dependencies.
  • Optimize images and media delivery.
  • Implement appropriate caching strategies.
  • Optimize CSS and JavaScript loading.
  • Work with SEO teams to maintain technical SEO performance.
  • Investigate performance regressions following releases.

Security

  • Maintain WordPress security best practices.
  • Manage WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates.
  • Identify vulnerable or obsolete plugins.
  • Implement appropriate access controls.
  • Support security reviews and vulnerability remediation.
  • Work with IT/security teams on penetration testing and remediation.
  • Ensure appropriate backup and recovery procedures.
  • Follow organizational security and compliance requirements.

Integrations

  • Develop and maintain integrations between WordPress and external systems such as CRM, marketing automation, analytics, forms, lead-generation platforms, social platforms, SEO platforms, third-party SaaS applications, and internal applications.
  • Use REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, and authentication mechanisms.
  • Troubleshoot API integration and data-flow issues.

SEO & Analytics

  • Work with SEO and Marketing teams to support SEO and analytics requirements.
  • Support GA4, Google Search Console, structured data/schema, XML sitemaps, metadata, canonical URLs, redirects, robots.txt, technical SEO, website tracking, and conversion tracking.

Release & Change Management

  • Manage website releases from development to staging to production.
  • Establish appropriate deployment and rollback procedures.
  • Conduct pre-production testing.
  • Maintain release documentation.
  • Ensure production changes are controlled and traceable.
  • Minimize production downtime and deployment risks.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the technical point of contact for WordPress.
  • Provide technical estimates for new requirements.
  • Review work produced by other developers.
  • Establish development standards and best practices.
  • Perform code reviews.
  • Mentor the 5+ year WordPress developer.
  • Identify technical debt and recommend remediation.
  • Maintain technical documentation and architecture information.
  • Help define the future WordPress/web technology roadmap.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Creative, UX/UI, Marketing, SEO, Content, Product/business stakeholders, Data/Analytics, IT, Cybersecurity, and external agencies/vendors.
  • Translate between business requirements, creative designs, and technical implementation.

Qualifications

Must Have

  • 8+ years of professional web development experience.
  • 5+ years of strong WordPress development experience.
  • Strong PHP and WordPress architecture/development.
  • HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, responsive web development.

  • WordPress themes and custom plugins.
  • Gutenberg/block development.
  • REST APIs.
  • Git/GitHub/GitLab/Azure DevOps.
  • WP Engine or comparable managed WordPress environment.
  • Website deployment and release management.
  • Website performance optimization.
  • WordPress security.
  • Debugging and troubleshooting.

Strongly Preferred

  • js and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Advanced Custom Fields (ACF).
  • Elementor or equivalent page-builder experience.
  • WooCommerce, where applicable.
  • CI/CD and Docker.
  • CDN technologies and Cloudflare.
  • Redis/object caching.

  • Technical SEO.
  • Web accessibility/WCAG.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.

Role Expectations

  • Be the technical owner rather than a page-builder-only developer.
  • Be able to diagnose website performance, production incidents, plugin conflicts, infrastructure issues, and release failures.
  • Be able to evaluate whether a design should be implemented as a reusable block, template, plugin, or page.
  • Be comfortable owning production website technology and infrastructure.
