The Role and Team
As a Staff QA Engineer you will be working with our engineering team for our Digital Experience Analytics (DXA) product. This product analyzes user interactions in our customers' websites and applications and helps them understand what improvements need to be made and where the pain points are on their sites. This is not a small endeavour, as we collect and process more than 5 petabytes of data every month.
You’ll help us to make sure analytics data is correct and complete as it moves through our processing pipeline to customer dashboards. You’ll mix SQL, Python, and API testing with Java automation in CI — and partner with engineering teams to build lasting checks, not one-off manual passes.
What You’ll Bring: Solid integration QA experience, comfort with databases and delayed/async data, and ability to own the quality approach in a multi-team environment. There is no need to know our stack upfront.
You’ll design the approach, build key automation, and work with engineering teams that don’t have much QA. You’re not expected to know our products on day one.
Staff here means: you can run the quality program yourself — priorities, framework, gates, working with teams — without needing a QA manager to assign daily work.
Responsibilities
- Quality Program Ownership: Define, own, and execute quality strategy, test frameworks, and deployment gates across multi-team environments without requiring daily task management.
- Test Automation & CI Integration: Build and maintain repeatable integration test suites in Java and JUnit, embedding execution into Jenkins pipelines.
- Data Verification Tooling: Write scripts and SQL queries to compare datasets, parse logs/JSON payloads, and detect missing or malformed pipeline data.
- API & Asynchronous Testing: Implement REST API test coverage designed to handle processing delays and asynchronous data states.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with backend engineering teams to build permanent automated checks and articulate defect priorities and failure root causes.
Candidates based in the Tysons vicinity will be prioritized as this role is Hybrid, 3 days per week onsite.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Quality Engineering Experience: 8+ years of professional experience in backend, integration, and data QA or SDET roles.
- SQL & Data Validation: Hands-on experience writing queries to inspect missing or incorrect session data and converting manual verification checks into repeatable automated tests.
- Python Tooling: Experience developing tools in Python to parse JSON, analyze system logs, compare data outputs, and report system failures.
- API Testing: Experience testing RESTful web services, including verifying multi-step systems with delayed or asynchronous data delivery.
- Java Automation & CI/CD: Experience writing automated integration tests using Java and JUnit, and managing scheduled test executions within CI/CD systems like Jenkins.
- Cloud Infrastructure Debugging: Experience using AWS services (e.g., S3 for test artifacts) and reading cloud system logs to debug test failures.
- Release Engineering: Experience defining release criteria and establishing pass/fail deployment gates.
Preferred Qualifications
- Domain Experience: Background testing analytics or observability products.
- Contract & Schema Testing: Experience implementing contract or schema validation tests across distributed services.
- Distributed Systems & Queues: Experience testing message queues (e.g., Apache Kafka) or working across secondary cloud providers (Azure/GCP).
- UI Smoke Automation: Experience writing lightweight UI smoke tests using Selenium or Playwright.
- BDD Frameworks: Hands-on experience using Cucumber alongside JUnit.
- AI-Assisted Engineering: Experience utilizing AI-assisted coding tools for test automation development.
