About Brick...

Brick is transforming how people interact with technology—helping people minimize distractions, reclaim focus, and live more intentionally. Our physical device and companion app turn smartphones from sources of distraction into tools for presence and productivity.

We’re on a mission to help people take back control of their time and attention so they can focus on what matters most—and we’re building a team of thoughtful, driven people to make that happen.

Brick is building an elegant solution to digital distraction through a combination of software and hardware that helps people stay focused, reclaim time, and do more of what matters. With the Brick app and companion device, users can block distracting apps and notifications to better align their time with intention.

We are scaling rapidly and are building out a robust cloud platform that supports mobile clients, hardware devices, analytics, personalization, and real-time features.

Job Summary / About the Role:

As a Senior iOS Engineer, you will own major parts of the iOS application architecture, feature development, system design, and user experience. You will work across Swift, SwiftUI/UIKit, native frameworks, NFC / Bluetooth integrations, secure data flows, and performance-sensitive functionality that interacts directly with our backend and hardware.

This is a senior, high-impact role where you will help shape the future of Brick’s iOS product. You will guide architectural decisions, establish best practices, and collaborate closely with product, design, backend, and hardware teams to deliver a polished, world-class app used every day.

Location:

This role is based either in our Chicago office or based in San Francisco, with an expectation of at least 3 days per week in person. Given the cross-functional nature of this work, in-person collaboration is a core part of how we operate — with flexibility to work from home as needed.

What You’ll Do:

  • iOS Architecture & Feature Development
  • Lead development of core features using Swift and modern iOS frameworks.
  • Architect clean, testable, maintainable code with strong attention to reliability and performance.
  • Drive major initiatives across app blocking logic, analytics instrumentation, personalization, and user-facing flows.
  • Build a seamless and responsive UI using SwiftUI.
  • System Design & Core Platform
  • Improve app performance, offline behavior, caching, concurrency, and state management.
  • Implement robust communication layers with backend APIs, websockets, and local persistence.
  • Work on companion device integration, including Bluetooth, firmware communication, and secure device pairing.
  • Strengthen app security, sandboxing interactions, and safe handling of sensitive user data.
  • Quality, Tooling & Best Practices
  • Lead test strategy, including unit testing, integration testing, snapshot testing, and CI reliability.
  • Improve developer experience through tooling, modularization, and architecture patterns.
  • Contribute to code review, documentation, and consistent engineering standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with product and design to define user experiences that are intuitive, purposeful, and delightful.
  • Work closely with backend engineers to shape API contracts, sync protocols, and real-time features.
  • Collaborate with hardware teams to deliver seamless mobile-to-device interactions.
  • Technical Leadership
  • Influence the long-term technical vision of the iOS app and broader client platform.
  • Mentor other mobile engineers and help grow a high-quality iOS engineering culture.
  • Drive technical discovery, prototyping, and execution of complex product initiatives.

What You’ll Need to Have:

  • 5+ years of professional iOS engineering experience with expertise in Swift.
  • Strong background in iOS app architecture, structured concurrency, dependency injection, and other best practices..
  • Deep experience with SwiftUI and UIKit, and fluency in deciding when to use each effectively.
  • Comfortable working with networking, async flows, local persistence, and real-time updates.
  • Strong skills in performance profiling, debugging, memory management, and instrumenting complex mobile systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, product, and hardware.

Nice to Have:

  • Strong understanding of iOS internals including background execution limits, permissions, lifecycle management, and battery constraints.
  • Familiarity with ManagedSettings framework, BLE, secure device communication, or hardware integrations is a strong plus.
  • Experience with system-level features such as Accessibility Services, device controls, or app usage enforcement.
  • Strong experience leveraging AI (Claude Code, Codex, etc.) in the mobile developer workflows.
  • Ability to operate autonomously, navigate ambiguity, and drive high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced startup environment.

The base salary range for this role is $150,000–$210,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
