Full description

You will lead the controls approach for DTE’s measurement and sampling solutions: the embedded software architecture, the safety functions, the plant interfaces and the conventions that let one design be built, commissioned and supported many times over.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role with real technical authority. You will set direction on the software, review the work of others, and be the person the team turns to when a machine does something nobody expected. You will spend most of your time writing and validating control software, and some of it in production plants making it work.

We build advanced industrial systems where control software meets the physical world. Our team develops laser, robotic, and automation solutions engineered from the ground up and deployed across production plants worldwide to deliver real-time elemental analysis of molten metal. DTE’s patented technology tells producers what is in the melt while it is still in the furnace — something that has not been possible until now — and that data is the foundation for real-time process control, higher recycling rates and lower emissions.

Our equipment lives in a hard place — heat, dust, vibration and electrical noise, a few meters from molten aluminum. You need to be comfortable designing for that environment, and comfortable being in it when necessary.

What you will do

  • Define the software and controls architecture across our product variants — sampling, robot cell, induction heating, gas handling and interlocks - as one reusable framework, not a new program per machine.
  • Write the embedded and control software - real-time sequencing, state machines, device and sensor interfaces, diagnostics and HMI.
  • Design and validate safety-related control functions to the required performance level under EN ISO 13849 (or SIL under EN IEC 62061), with the evidence that supports our CE Declaration of Conformity.
  • Integrate with customer plant systems over Modbus, EtherNet/IP and OPC UA, and work with electrical design on I/O architecture and component selection.
  • Support commissioning and third-level troubleshooting, remotely and occasionally on site.
  • Raise the engineering standard around you through code review, conventions and testing practice — and turn field and customer feedback into design improvements.

What we are looking for

  • At least 3 years developing C/C++ or PLC control systems for industrial equipment.
  • Strong programmer with real depth in embedded software design — real-time behaviour, state machines, sensor and actuator interfaces, and debugging on target hardware.
  • Experience with embedded environments (e.g., RTOS, Embedded Linux) or modern industrial automation platforms (e.g., Beckhoff TwinCAT, B&R Automation Studio) is advantageous; candidates with strong software engineering and real-time systems fundamentals will also be considered.
  • A self-starter who can take an ambiguous problem, define the approach and carry it through — and who is generous with what they know.
  • Comfortable around electrical schematics, functional safety and equipment that sits next to molten metal; EPLAN, robotics or EN ISO 13849 experience is an advantage.
  • Excellent English; Icelandic or other languages an advantage.

  • One controls framework in place across our product variants, instead of variation per machine.
  • Safety functions specified, validated and documented to a standard we can defend under the EU Machinery Regulation.
  • Commissioning made faster and more predictable, because the controls behave the same way on every site.
