POSITION TITLE

Software Engineer - Java Development

This role is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

POSITION LOCATION

Lynchburg, VA ; Richmond, VA; or Remote Eastern & Central time zones

*Hybrid in-office would be required if you reside within 50 miles of our Richmond or Lynchburg, VA office. Required in-office days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with working hours targeting our core business hours of 9am-5pm EST.

YOUR ROLE

As a Software Engineer, you'll contribute to the design, development, implementation, and support of technology solutions that are foundational to the world-class service our customers expect and deserve. Working collaboratively with business and technology teams, you'll help deliver innovative, secure, and reliable software solutions while continuing to grow your technical expertise in modern software engineering practices.

What you will be doing

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based applications and services that support critical business processes.
  • Support production applications by investigating incidents, resolving defects, and implementing enhancements to improve system reliability and user experience.
  • Translate business requirements and user stories into scalable, maintainable software solutions.
  • Participate in application design discussions and contribute to technical solution recommendations.
  • Develop and support RESTful APIs, microservices, and integrations with internal and external systems.
  • Troubleshoot application defects, performance issues, and production incidents while identifying root causes and implementing solutions.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, process flows, and system design artifacts.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the adoption of software engineering best practices and coding standards.
  • Collaborate with developers, architects, business analysts, QA engineers, and infrastructure teams to deliver technology solutions.
  • Contribute to application modernization, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Copilot to improve developer productivity, accelerate software delivery, enhance code quality, and support testing, troubleshooting, and documentation activities.
  • Apply engineering judgment to validate, test, secure, and maintain AI-generated code and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, and software delivery automation to enable secure, reliable, and high-quality software solutions.
  • Work effectively with distributed teams across multiple locations and time zones. ​

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 + years of experience in application development or software engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience developing applications using Java.
  • Experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, or similar enterprise application frameworks.
  • Experience developing, supporting, and consuming RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Working knowledge of software engineering principles, object-oriented design, and modern development practices.
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience using Git-based source control systems and collaborative development workflows.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver solutions in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for continuous learning and adopting emerging technologies. ​

    

Nice to have

  • Experience using GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, or similar AI-assisted software development tools.
  • Experience working in modern software engineering environments that leverage Agile delivery, DevSecOps practices, CI/CD automation, cloud technologies, and AI-assisted development tools.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
  • Experience with container technologies such as Docker / Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to security scanning tools such as SonarQube, SAST, DAST, or dependency scanning solutions.
  • Experience supporting enterprise business applications within insurance, financial services, or healthcare industries.
  • Interest in leveraging AI technologies to improve software development, testing, documentation, operational support, and developer productivity.​

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

National Range: $77,800 - $117,000

Disclaimer: This role is aligned to a national market-based pay range. Actual compensation will vary based on geographic location, experience, skills, and other job-related factors. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible to participate in a bonus incentive plan. Incentive compensation is based on individual and company performance and is not guaranteed.
