The work

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you’ll own and shape the infrastructure that powers our computational workflows platform. Your work will make sure compute-heavy quantum workloads can run reliably, scale efficiently, and recover gracefully when things go wrong.

You’ll work across Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, bare-metal systems, networking, CI/CD, observability, and infrastructure as code — seeing how these pieces fit together as one platform rather than as isolated systems.

This is a role with real technical ownership. You’ll make and document infrastructure decisions, balance reliability, performance, cost and complexity, and help shape how the platform evolves as it grows. You’ll work closely with teams across Algorithms, Software, Product, Quantum Enablement, and Cloud.

What you’ll actually do

• Design, build, and maintain infrastructure for compute-heavy, job-driven workloads using Kubernetes, cloud and bare-metal environments.

• Own and evolve key infrastructure areas such as orchestration, CI/CD, observability, networking, and cloud architecture.

• Build reliable systems for variable and bursty workloads, including autoscaling, redundancy, recovery, and graceful failure handling.

• Improve infrastructure security, monitoring, deployment and incident-response practices, reducing operational risk before issues occur.

• Use Terraform and other infrastructure-as-code tools to create maintainable, scalable infrastructure and establish good engineering standards.

• Make and document technical decisions, balancing cost, performance, reliability, complexity, and long-term maintainability.

• Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical discussions, reviews, documentation, and infrastructure best practices.

What we’re looking for

• 7+ years of experience in DevOps, infrastructure, SRE, platform engineering, or a closely related field.

• Strong, hands-on Kubernetes experience, including setup, maintenance, scaling, and troubleshooting.

• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform or OpenTofu.

• Strong scripting skills in Python and Bash, with at least 2 years of practical experience.

• At least 2 years of experience managing bare-metal machines in remote data centres.

• Solid understanding of network setup and management.

• Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider, particularly AWS or GCP.

• A systems mindset and the ability to make and explain technical decisions, understand trade-offs, and take ownership of the outcomes.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus points if you have:

• Hands-on experience with Ansible.

• Experience with Argo Workflows or Argo Events.

• Experience operating compute-intensive or distributed workloads.

• Experience with reliability engineering, SLOs/SLIs, incident response, or infrastructure cost optimisation.

• Experience mentoring engineers or setting technical standards within a team.
