JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, is responsible for special projects, public events, and maintenance activities of all recreation and park facilities. Work involves operating heavy and light equipment; maintaining knowledge and use of various tools and trades.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Oversees and supervises job while participating in the required work.
- Reads and interprets blueprints; plans and lays out jobs to ensure cost effectiveness.
- Shoots grades using laser or sight level to ensure levels of roads, playing fields, parking lots, drain fields, etc.
- Plans and installs sewer and water lines, storm drains, and electrical PVC.
- Repairs various types of equipment (such as playground equipment, diesel engines, etc.).
- Performs landscaping; maintains familiarity with planting trees and shrubs; and removes unwanted trees and shrubs.
- Maintains and manages dirt and rock pits.
- Performs carpentry, welding, and fence work.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
- Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports such as blueprints and landscape plans.
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as as-built drawings, etc.
- Refers to standardize specifications, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery (such as backhoe, trackhoe, grader, bulldozer, roller, etc.).
- Uses a variety of tools (such as laser, tape measure, string line, etc.); and a variety of supplies (such as fill dirt, topsoil, rock, asphalt, general office supplies, etc.).
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Parks and Recreation Director, coworkers, other Town department heads and personnel, and the general public).
- Repairs and remodels buildings in the Parks.
- Drives dump truck to deliver supplies to and from job sites.
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a vocational school diploma supplemented by three to four years’ experience in the general maintenance and operation of heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina Class “A” commercial driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Assistant Project Manager.
- Knowledge of the organization of the Department and of related departments and agencies.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Knowledge in the areas of facilities and grounds maintenance, mechanics, electrical, carpentry, horticulture/landscape maintenance.
- Knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department.
- Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
- Knowledge of how to personally demonstrate appropriate customer service skills.
- Knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, spelling and basic mathematics.
- Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Skill in carpentry and construction.
- Ability to evaluate facility, grounds and equipment maintenance needs and perform maintenance/repairs to ensure a safe environment for staff and citizens.
- Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
- Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
- Ability to prepare required records with accuracy and in a timely manner.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers.
- Ability to perform required mathematical computations with accuracy.
- Ability to perform duties effectively despite infrequent exposure to extreme heat/cold, wetness, humidity, electrical currents, machinery hazards, dusts/pollen, toxic agents, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 20 pounds), and occasionally heavier objects and materials (up to 50 pounds).
