Software Development Engineer, Backend (Python /Kubernetes)

The Senior Specialist, Software Engineering, Back End designs, builds, and operates scalable, reliable backend services and platforms that power Zillow’s consumer and partner experiences. This role leads complex server-side development, improves system performance and resiliency, and collaborates closely with product, data, and infrastructure teams to support millions of users and enable developer productivity across multiple brands.

We leverage technology best suited for each use case, however, our teams typically use the following tech: Python, Java, NodeJS, and Go for our APIs and services A range of persistence strategies including relational and non-relational databases

About the role

As a Senior Software Development Engineer, you’ll lead the delivery and ongoing support of projects from end-to-end. In addition, you will:

• Contribute to the design of new features.

• Review the code of your peers

• Advocate for standard methodologies

• Facilitate engineering discussions

• Mentor junior engineers

• Participate in an inclusive, energetic and highly multi-functional team.

This role has been categorized as a teleworker position. Teleworkers do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and instead work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live anywhere in Mexico, with availability to travel to Mexico City, as we recommend attendance at occasional office events.

In addition to a competitive base salary and benefits, this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location.

Who you are

• Bringing 5+ years of software development experience with Java, Python, NodeJS, and Go for APIs and services.

• Experienced in a range of persistence strategies including relational and non-relational databases.

• Fluent in English and Spanish (both written and spoken).  

• Must be authorized to work in Mexico. 

• Highly skilled with multiple modern development technologies used to design, deliver, debug, and maintain front-end user interfaces and back-end software systems.

• Recognized as a technical leader on your team for several years and have an impact beyond your team.

• Strong proficiency in Python and willingness to work across the stack

• Hands-on experience with AWS, including S3, ec2, IAM, EKS, and others.

• Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, API design, observability, and operational excellence

• Track record of partnering effectively with multiple engineering teams to deliver shared infrastructure

• Passionate about setting standard methodologies and raising the bar for systems design, testing, code quality, and maintainability - not only for the team but for the entire engineering organization!
