Full description

Meta Reality Labs is seeking an experienced Product Design Engineering Manager to lead mechanical engineering efforts for next-generation virtual and augmented reality hardware. In this role, you will manage a team of mechanical engineers responsible for the structural design, materials selection, and manufacturability of wearable AR devices, including headsets, controllers, and related accessories. You will partner closely with industrial design, electrical engineering, and operations teams to bring spatial computing products from concept through mass production.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers focused on product design for next-generation AR device
  • Partner with Tech Leads to drive mechanical design strategy across the full product development lifecycle, from concept ideation and prototyping through design validation and mass production
  • Establish engineering standards and design-for-manufacturability guidelines specific to consumer wearable hardware
  • Partner with industrial design, electrical engineering, and systems engineering teams to define mechanical architecture and resolve cross-disciplinary integration challenges
  • Oversee tolerance analysis, structural simulation, and materials selection for lightweight, ergonomic wearable form factors
  • Manage relationships with contract manufacturers and tooling vendors to ensure quality, cost, and schedule targets are met
  • Define team roadmaps, set priorities, and allocate engineering resources across concurrent hardware development programs
  • Review and approve mechanical design documentation, including CAD models, engineering drawings, and design verification test plans
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks in mechanical subsystems through structured design reviews and failure mode analysis
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow mechanical engineering talent, fostering a culture of technical rigor and collaborative problem-solving

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and/or equivalent industry experience
  • 12+ years of experience in mechanical or product design engineering for consumer electronics or wearable hardware products
  • 5+ years of experience managing teams through full product development cycles, from concept to mass production
  • Experience with mechanical design tools such as NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or equivalent CAD platforms, and familiarity with tolerance analysis and structural simulation methods
  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers and managing tooling, DFM, and NPI processes for high-volume consumer hardware
  • Experience leading cross-functional hardware programs in partnership with electrical engineering, industrial design, and operations teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing mechanical systems for VR, AR, or mixed reality wearable devices, including optics integration, thermal management, and ergonomic form factor development
  • Experience with end-to-end ownership (discovery to launch) and execution of programs
  • Familiarity with advanced materials and manufacturing processes relevant to lightweight wearable structures, such as injection molding, magnesium die casting, or composite fabrication
  • Experience owning and managing hardware programs with aggressive cost, weight, and reliability constraints in a consumer electronics context
  • Track record of building and scaling mechanical engineering organizations within a fast-paced hardware development environment
  • Experience Resource balancing and management
  • Experience with budget forecasting, tracking, and management
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering
