Java Engineer

Role Summary

As a Java Engineer, you'll play a key role in designing, developing, and supporting modern backend applications that power critical banking services. You'll work across the full software delivery lifecycle, from development and testing to deployment and production support.

This role offers the opportunity to work with modern technologies including Java 17/21, Spring Boot, Microservices, PostgreSQL, and Azure DevOps, while contributing to high-quality, reliable, and scalable solutions in a global enterprise environment.

About the Team

You'll join our Shared Tech team, an engineering-led and innovation-focused group that values collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.

Working closely with product owners, architects, DevOps engineers, quality engineers, and fellow developers, you'll help deliver solutions that support ING's mission of empowering people to stay a step ahead in life and in business.

What You'll Do

• Develop, enhance, and maintain backend applications using Java 17 and Java 21.
• Design and implement microservices using Spring Boot and related frameworks.
• Build and support RESTful APIs and enterprise integration solutions.
• Write clean, secure, maintainable, and high-quality code.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize application performance.
• Design and optimize PostgreSQL database solutions, queries, and data models.
• Build and maintain automated tests to support quality and reliability.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation using Azure DevOps.
• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
• Investigate production issues and implement long-term improvements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering practices.

Required Skills

We're looking for someone who brings:

• Strong hands-on experience in Java development.
• Experience with Java 17 and/or Java 21.
• Strong knowledge of Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and microservices architecture.
• Experience developing REST APIs and backend services.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and clean coding principles.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, including SQL development and performance optimization.
• Experience working with Git-based source control systems.
• Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, including repositories, pipelines, and deployment workflows.
• Understanding of CI/CD practices and DevOps ways of working.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Exposure to Microsoft Azure cloud services.
• Experience with monitoring, logging, and application support.
• Familiarity with automated testing frameworks and code quality tools.
• Knowledge of application performance tuning and secure software delivery.
• Experience supporting release and deployment activities.
• Exposure to payment systems and financial services environments.
